Thinking about making the switch and wanted to see which cichla keepers feed NLS?

Pros I have found thus far:
4.125lbs for $50 (NLS 10mm) vs 2.2lbs for $43 (massivore)
9% ash maximum (NLS) vs 17% ash maximum of hikari
No soy products in NLS
No mystery starches and fillers in NLS
Made in good 'ol US of A

The only Con I have found is that it seems to be a bit less palatable to the fish vs Massivore.

Who has made the switch successfully and should i try 1mm or 3mm for 4"-6" growouts? (leaning towards the 3mm)

I have actually considered using NLS for my cichla. It's a great food and product no doubt about that. I've used NLS for years with my old cichlids and it's given me awesome results. The thing with transitioning from soft foods such as massivore to hard food like NLS, its gonna feel and taste different to the fish. It's going to take time to adjust. Just keep offering it to them and within time they should develop a taste for it. I'm pretty confident they're going to ignore the 1 mm. I think 3 mm would be best.

Ok thanks for your input. I will try the 3mm for the growouts and 10mm for the big boys.

You're welcome. Let us know how it goes. If 3mm doesn't work out for the smaller guys, you should give the 2mm a try. I also heard the 10mm is hard as a rock lol.

I have been trying to feed 10mm to my Cichla for 6+ months. My O's will eat it but still don't like it, my monos eat it but still don't like it, my bahias would rather die, my Tem eats it, and I don't feed it to my smaller bass. What I've noticed is their colors are a little duller and my fish aren't as fat.

Unless you have cichla that are 20+ inches, I would go with a smaller NLS pellet. 6mm Thera, or one of the larger floating pellets, 4.5mm for smaller fish, or the 7.5mm for larger fish. If they will eat floating pellets. The floating formulas are less dense (hard) due to the way they are extruded, and they are much easier for converting fish in my experience. The Channa pair in my avatar (12-13") would eat the 10mm when in a very large very busy comm tank (with cichla) but greatly prefer the 4.5mm floating when they were kept by themselves in a less aggressive feeding scenario.

The 10mm are hard as rocks, definitely a hard sell to most fish unless they are huge, or will eat anything that you toss in the tank. Presoaking does not help, unless you let them sit for several hours.

For 4-6" growouts I would also recommend the 3mm.

If you feed Hikari - its for the feel and taste it gives your fish.

Once fish get onto NLS - they tend to love it, and it shows. Great colors, healthy fish.

Getting them onto NLS might be as difficult as transitioning them onto pellets in the first place.

I feed a mix of Hikari and NLS. I alternat every other day. All my fish go after anything that hits the water. Just wish I could find a little better price on the NLS as im getting raked over tho fire now for the price of the stuff I bought.

My Cichla and everything else in my tanks won't eat NLS. My cichla will eat anything Hikari including algae wafers and same goes for my rays,catfish.etc. I am not going to change what's not broken, if they eat pellets that's all that matters for me as they eat a varied diet anyway and get all the nutrition they need.
