I think a huge reason why Flowerhorns these days don't last as long as the older generations is because people nowadays pump their flowerhorns with food extremely high in fat/protein. Do you think if we just feed non "Specialized Flowerhorn Food", our fish would last longer?

I'm not leaving out poor tank size, cleanings and etc, I just think the leading cause of early Flowerhorn deaths are a result of diseases linked to too much fat/protein in their diet.

I agree, NLS will make your fish live long I guarantee you. CM is great stuff, but I'm not positive to say how healthy it is to be exact. Been feeding my fish CM for a few months and the result doesn't really satisfy me(it works no doubt but I think I'm going to switch back). Water quality also plays a huge role how your fish will come along also. Keep in mind also...nice warm temperature makes flowerhorns happier. :D

But doesn't warmer water also make flowerhorns die sooner? I've seen fh's kept in temps of 78 Degrees live longer than fh's that are kept in 84 degree water.

Not quite, it all falls into what kind of care are you giving them exactly in terms of feeding, water quality, water temperature etc. There is more to than what I just listed, everything you do plays a role on how long the fish will last(I can't really answer exactly what to do since I've never had any flowerhorns that lived that long due to the fact that I been studying about them more than being a hobbyist, and these information came from all the hobbyist I've known to have kept flowerorns reaching 5 years or older). And I wouldn't suggest 84 degrees to be their water temp, 80-82 would be more ideal IMO.

Hey, If you want I can go down to an old school asian aquaruim store in toronto. They had some flowerforns since the dawn of the hype ... some of them must be 6-7 years old...

do u think shortbodys will live less longer

So whats the average life expectancy of the average flowerhorn?

To be honest, most hobbyist can't seem to keep them even halfway through their age. They can push up to 7-9 years and most only made it to 3 years from what I've seen. This is what I picked up when I was studying about them before I jumped into the hobby itself. Maybe someone else have seen it differently.
