Amongst the Catfish & Plecos
I need to place a gastric tube in my 26.5" hybrid to syringe feed internal parasite medication. He hasn't eaten in 2 months, and he shows no sign of change for the better. I think he is less likely to get hurt, hurt us, or vomit the medication from stress if I sedate him. What advice FROM EXPERIENCE can you offer me? Thank you.

PM johnptc, i know he's done it before, and i can't find the thread but he was talking about the way to do it..

You know I talked to him about it, but he only mentioned sedating Sam at the time. He mentioned how difficult it was using the typical fish method since Sam breathes air. I'll see if he's sedated anything else.

I have sedated a giant gourami with clove oil to remove anchor worms. It worked great. I doubled the clove oil to 10 drops per gallon b/c he was such a large powerful fish. After about 5-10 minutes in the water the GG was out. I removed the anchor worms with tweezers and placed the GG back into his tank. He slowly began reviving and after 10-15 minutes he was fine. Make sure your fish is out completely before starting to work on him ( my GG was so out I thought I may have killed him )and use caution when putting him back in his tank because he will not be able to control himself at first and may crash into walls etc. Hope that helps.

yea i think the whole clove oil trick is your best shot... you can even check with your lfs and see if they have any. :D good luck to you and the fish

Thanks guys. I'll do a thread on it when its done. It'll be a few days before we do this, and I'll try to get a third party over here to take video. Wish me luck. I adore this fish...
