Who here feeds with dog or cat food pellets?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Glad a semi OG such as yourself even provides an input into this controversial subject. Lol. I would never do this with cichlid. But for catfish, polys, real predator type species. Supplementing is ok.

He actually feeds them mainly cat food, and he gives me them frozen food/live food once every 2 weeks or something like that. He's been doing that for 3 years too. He told me about it last year. Don't remember the exact details.

It's cleaner and the aftermath smells better than hikari.
That's what King-eL said. The smell does not spread in the room. He did say use a cup to scoop the pellets because the smell sticks to your hand if you touch it.

I personally wouldn't. I just feed normal pellets and add fish or worms to the weekly diet rather than the other way round, just my way of doing it

You chose a pretty good cat food as there's no blood meal or ash content. It should be fine as an occasional treat. The fish could do without the 20% fat (so could your filter). But, used sparingly, I don't see a problem.

I agree with that. would the high fat effect overall long term health?

I've thought that it may be a good idea as a treat or once a week or every other week additive to diet also. Haven't done it yet. I have was looking for a supplemental food with a higher vitamin mineral count then what most fish food have without having to feed live gut loaded somethings. I've done this with reptiles and seems to be no issues, in fact everybody always wanted to know why my snakes looked so much more iridescent then theirs. I did worry about pollution of the water though with the higher fat and additives.

King-El has killed more fish than most people here will ever own. Who cares what he does?

Potatoes? Canola Oil?

I think most of what needs to be said on this subject I have already posted in the past. Fish aren't dogs, nor are they cats, and personally I wouldn't feed that so call holistic cat food to a fish, or a cat. Read on if you want to understand why.

BTW - it's not just the high level of fat that is an issue for polys (as well as most warm water tropical fish) - it's also the type of fat in this cat food (canola oil) which is terrestrial based. The vast majority of fish do not do well on terrestrial based lipids, which is why its use is limited in aquaculture feed - even feed designed for herbivores. There are many decades worth of research on this subject, so instead of forming an opinion based on some OG hyperbole, maybe spend some time doing some homework. Goggle is your friend.

Good luck.
