Who is making the noises?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a few older books that refer to the family that the raphael is in as the talking catfish.

The Raphael Cat or the Pictus cat. They sound really weird. Clown loaches and balas also click.

My family of raphs talks at night. The small ones sound like giant crickets and the big ones sound like a heavy plate wobbling in the sink under pressure.
OMG! Hahahahaha!!! I love how you describe their sounds so well. Yes, the small ones definitely sound like crickets. I had one squeal on me when it locked my fingers in its fins. My mistake for letting my fingers astray between its fins.:(

I use their locking attack as a stabilizer when I move them. I let the hard ray of the pectoral fin clamp down on my index finger and the cat usually holds on as I move it. Very useful tool for otherwise wiggly monsters. I only got cut once when I had my finger turned the wrong way and it clamped down next to my fingernail on the thin skin. But if it clamps on the thicker parts of your skin, and you let the cat let go on its own, there's no injury at all.

i would guess it has to be one of the cats but my bgk makes some loud clicking nosies but only when i feed it.

wait a sec... How much do the Raphael catfish sound like crickets? I've been going crazy for the past few week thinking a cricket was in my room and cannot find it, but if the cricket sound is the raphael then either they can make other high pitch squeeks or someone else is chiming in too because I hear distinct squeeks as well. And the clicking almost sound like a stun gun just not as loud, but its fast tempo like stun gun. Also if the pictus, featherfin and raphael are the cuprits, are the sounds them fighting or having fun, during the day the featherfin and raphael share a log and are shy, while my pictus has ADHD all day, but at night they all share the log (even though there is tons of other real estate that is unused in the tank).

What are you planning to keep the bichir with, if you don't mind my asking?

I kind of want to add a striped raphael to my tank, but I don't know about all this clicking & cricket business...
