What are you planning to keep the bichir with, if you don't mind my asking?

I kind of want to add a striped raphael to my tank, but I don't know about all this clicking & cricket business...

I don't mind, he is my plans for all these guys...

150G:
Tiger Oscar
Severum
Eartheater
Senegal Bichir
BGK

125G:
Pictus Cat
African Featherfin Cat
Raphael Cat
4 Tinfoil Barbs

55G:
Firemouth
Peacock Eel
Acei

Female jack will join my adult male jack in his 75G when shes big enough.

Everything will happen (upgrade) in January when I get me bonus, but I wanted them to have some size by then which is why I started them before I got the big tanks.

Ah cool. I'm trying to get ideas for my two sen's & Jack dempsey in a 65g. I'm starting to get all defeatist on myself and think there just isn't gonna be much else I can do with stocking that tank:\

How does you jack act towards your bichir? My female jack did not like my bichir at all, she was biting him repeatedly so I had to seperate them.

So far they're fine. All of them are still pretty juvenile...the larger of the two bichirs might be 4 and a half inches, the smaller is closer to 3.5, the jack might be two inches long.

They've been in a 20gal together for about a week & a half or so now and are getting along fine. They bicker over food a little bit (They're all eating the same sinking pellets) but they don't go after each other...they just kind of dart in and take whatever food the other might be eating. The jack will show the bichirs a little bit of interest, but he just kind meanders up to them and it doesn't seem to bother them.

I think the jack is a male but I'm not really sure (I did a quick google search standing in petsmart and it said the black dot near the center is an indicator of a male jack?) and the bichirs are too young to tell.

I feel like they're going to end up getting along fine, so we'll see. I don't really have any options except trying to give one party or the other to my LFS though, so I'm really hoping for the best.

They very well may be fine, every fish is different. And a good way to tell if its a female is if it has a beard (thanks MFK's for teaching me this) a beard is greenish scales on the chin of the fish. You can look at my female jack in my album to see if that helps. The one on my album cover is my adult male not my small female.

Cool, I'm pretty sure its a male, but this is based on my memory of the coloration...and my short term memory has shriveled up and died...

He's already dark with the bright greenish/blueish spots and a nice red tip on his fin, but I'm pretty sure there's no green around the mouth.

Oh while I'm thinking about his colors...I know a lot of fish change colors showing stress and whatnot...all the jacks in the tank were a paleish white base color, by the time he'd been in the back for 20 minutes on the car ride home he was already getting nice and dark and once he made it into our tank he looked like a regular jack dempsey. Does this mean he was stressed as all hell in the pet store? Just curious.

Assuming these three get along well, how do you think a severum (or a few) would do in the tank? Firemouths? Angelfish? Gouramis?

I hate bombarding with questions especially in an unrelated thread...but I've posted a few times asking and haven't really gotten any substantial replies, especially not from someone sitting here talking back and forth consistently.

So sorry for the hijack and thanks for the help :D

Color change is normal, could have been he was stressed in the store, or that he was not the dominant fish (darker means a happy/healthy jack), also could have been simply the gravel, light gravel will make a jack turn lighter to blend in. I cant really say how your jack will act to the other fish though as all personalities are differnt, my male jack will kill anything that is in his tank but this happened after his girl was killed, he was docile before that. My female jack only really gives chase, but for the most part doesnt care about my firemouth or severum. But, I think gouramis and angels arnt a good idea for the bichir do to that fact they are not that fast and the bichir might want to eat them when it gets big, plus gouramis are a-holes anyway.

Yeah I figured as much on the color changing, was just curious.

So basically I'm just going to need to wait and see how my jack's temperament turns out to be and then figure out whats large enough to not be bichir chow and docile enough to not stir up trouble but hardy enough to handle themselves depending on the jack's behavior...?

Do you think it would be better to start introducing some fish while they're all still growing to sort of 'acclimate' the jack to having tankmates?

My wife is not going to be pleased if we end up with a 65 gallon tank that has 3 fish in it :p (I say its just an excuse to go get a 55long for the bichirs to de-complicate things:D)
