When I had my bass it would be staring at me from the time I came into the room until I left, it was almost kinda creepy lol. They're great fish, very hardy and quite personable.

The only problems I see with bass are that many are illegally captured (its illegal to net gamefish in most states, and many individual bodies of water have size limits). I know for a FACT that several people on here have gotten theirs this way...

Also, many end up being kept in tanks that are way too small, or in less than ideal conditions. I realize that most other species of fish end up in bad situations as well, but for some reason it is often considered more acceptable with natives...

I thank those of you who got your bass legally, and that realize they will likely need something in the 6'x2'-8'x3' range to keep an adult!

LMAO!

the Maryland DNR is all over the news right now due to them fining two fishermen that saved a deer trapped in the ice in the patapsco river. ILLEGAL to save a life!!!!!!!!!!!!! It cost them a $90 fine each on technicalities in the successful rescue.

It has hit the newspapers and TV stations and the public is in an uproar and looking for some DNR heads to roll! Yesterday the head of the DNR came out in support of his two officers draconian actions.

Here is the last line of his statment, AND I QUOTE! "What started out to be a simply animal in distress call could have turned into a human tradegy"

Here is the translation for the naive type too "whatever" to even think of questioning the letter of the law or those in the position of authority.

"My officers were already on the scene for some time before the two fishermen came on the scene to offer their assistance. As true professionals, they had already formulated a plan and put the first phase of their plan (fingers in the fanny) into action. They made it clear that they did not want the fishermen's help! It was a serious show of disrespect that the fishmen instructed my officers to pull their heads out of their (explicative)! As previously mentioned it was their thumbs in their rectums, and not their heads! It is completely obvious that if there had been any trouble with the rescue by the two fishermen, that my officers would not have been capable of providing a save for them and you have two dead fishermen"

I appreciate the hundreds of people in the Maryland area that have donated thousands of dollars in the case to pay the fishermans fines and attempt to bring justice to the TRUE guilty parties!

I thank those that actually utilize the strongest brain on the planet (Human) to decide right and wrong rather then the brainless drone mode where by definition any and everythig that the lawmakers can poop out is 100% right and should ALWAYs be obeyed!

What does this have to do with anything I said? There's a good reason those fisherman got fined, they could have easily died or been injured, and for what, a couple deer? There were already officials there trying to save the deer, they didn't need to be baby sitting two other people as well. Sure, they were just trying to do what they thought was right, but the DNR doesn't want that kind of responsibility.

Fishing laws and regulations are there to protect our fisheries, if you can't see that, your the "brainless drone." There are already many bodies of water around the world that have suffered from over fishing and poaching, without regulations, many more would follow.

If you can't see that these regulations are actually there for a reason, then you shouldnt be keeping fish, or any animal for that matter.

I could be wrong but I dont believe Screaminleeman was putting down all our fishing laws and regulations.....and I agree they that as a whole they contribute more than they hurt; but he makes a valid point that these two officers were zealously overstepping their boundaries by fining fisherman who DID rescue the deer without hurting themselves, and yes I love Bass. The Bass I love the most are a natural hybrid Smallmouth\Spotted we have in some rivers in Missouri.....one very aggressive fish!

ok you might like this story, I had 3 large mouth bass in a 30g tank when i was about 10 years old. i got them at about 1 inch and they grew to about 5 inches in a year. i had 2 large crayfish in there aswell. they used to eat everything from raw chicken to anything i could find moving around the lawn. well one day, the largest bass decided to eat the largest crayfish which was about 4 inches. well he got it from the tail, and couldnt swallow it and the head and claws of the cray were hanging out for about 3 days. after that, my prized LMB kinda rolled over and died. the cray crawled out and lived close to a month after, but was like half digested. just goes to show how agressive these fish can be

Well, I will explain. Technically I am one of those "illegal types" that you so disrespect. As I have stated before, I have only ONE TIME not practiced catch and release with ANY freshwater game-fish. Again re-hashing my case scenario.

Over 8 years ago sediment runoff was taking its toll on my farm pond. I had the largest above ground spring feed diverted to the outlet and drained the pond. My Brother and myself dammed the creek on my property and placed thousands of fish into the hold until the construction company that we hired to dredge the pond (to 15' deep) was complete and the pond refilled. A major rain storm washed out the dam, and we lost every fish downstream. We had a large original population of LMB and bluegill, but lost everything.

I owned a fishing license. It was in season, and I caught (rod and reel) eight bass all well within the legal size limit (7 LMB & 1 SMB). I placed each in a large cooler filled with water and a small battery operated air pump. I hauled the cooler (with the eight bass) from the reservoir back to my truck and proceeded home. Now the big gipper. It would have been perfectly legal for me to fillet and eat them. I could legally mount them, punt them, stomp them to death etc. . . . . . .

I am simply a horrible heinous criminal since I instead let them live and released them into my 15' deep well over 100 foot diameter spring fed farm pond. Well, at least take moral victory in the knowledge that they never mated for me and that over the years as they reached 18" + the neighborhood kids that I let fish in the pond have removed all but two as of the current date. Given the average life expectancy of the LMB and the fact that they have got to be over a decade old now, you can rest assured that I will not be ILLEGALLY keeping these magnificent fish for too much longer.

The last point is that you are CRAZY (being very gentle here) if you think that residential recreational fisherman like my brother and myself are the impact on the fisheries. Newsflash: it is the commercial fishing industry that is carelessly depleting the fisheries dude! This and strictly to feed lazy overweight supermarket slobs that are too lazy to catch their own fish.

Hey just google "Tillman Island striped bass bust". It is a $500 fine for a poor old residential schmuck fisherman like myself to get caught with ONE fish under the legal limit. There is a certain Captain Buddy that on his SIXTH bust had literally hundreds of grossly undersized rock-fish. His fine was a grand total of $300!

If you are not aware of the fish that I am talking about, this fish was on a no catch moratorium for over a decade in the Chesapeake Bay. Reel fair? Not in my opinion. :headbang2

i have a largemouth about 9" or 10" he isnt to hard to keep only he ates everything i had a blue gill about 3 inchs and he just ate him today. i feed him live feeder goldfish still eats all my other fish
