I have tried to convince him get more of one component or another on more than one occasion but we almost get to the point of arguing. He says he's been doing this long enough to know what he is doing and dose not need anyones advice. He starves his rbp's so they can give him a show when he does feed them.

Ask him if you can do a full water test on it, or let it go. You'll never change this guys attitude with an argument.

I want to get one for my gf's 10 gallon tank. She wants to keep a crayfish in it for the cheap. I gave her a canopy, lights, air pump, gravel and heater. She just needs to get the tank and filter...I was thinking the cheapest would be undergravel filter. She is a poor college student =D

lol they are cheap. I like my new one its corrugated and has four outlets much more efficient it would seem. Plus it protects your tank bottom from heavy rocks :) In all reality its a stable way to help your tank along on the cheap and its a good compliment to other biological filters.

I dont even discuss the topic with him and its a shame because I dont have many people to talk fish with other than here.He showed me some pictures of work he had done in his home and his tank was in the background in some of the shots and it looks good but that is what made me start this thread.

Its possible to keep it clean with enough water changes but I would never use one as a solo filter. He must change a lot of water.

I run one on my 125 along with multiple hang-ons. But I only run one of the 3 1100 power heads most of the time. During water changes I put the siphon over the unused power heads and just blast the poo out of the tank. It's pretty sweet.

I don't under stand. May be better to run it full time with air stones to have a little flow because that helps the bacteria really get seated in the gravel and the under gravel.

I had one on my 30 gal back when I was just starting out, then I got into the Marineland power filters.

The jags are always moving the gravel around and laying eggs on the ug filter. The fear I have is that it will suck all the freshly hatched fry right through the powerhead.

When the babies are big enough to not get sucked through the cracks I turn all three on. In the mean time it's like a poo vacuum that I just have to switch on during water changes.
