Who uses carbon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think he is talking about a Polyfilter not polyfil. Polyfilters were designed to work on kidney dialysis machines and can be used until they turn black. It is an excellent source of chemical filtration. Carbon is good for polishing water or on standard tanks without live plants. The carbon will remove trace elements from the water that are needed by the plants and inverts in a SW tank. Polyfilters will also remove trace elements however they are great for removing toxins or just to have in the tank in case something gets in that does not belong. I usually cut the Polyfilter into strips about an inch wide and use them until they turn black.

good to help with eliminating chlorine but how often do you need to do that in an established aquarium unless you take too much H2O out or your water company for some reason added too much chlorine on accident.( i've heard of this happening) maybe for a new aquarium it it benificial but i still have no use for it personally and never will hopefully.

isn't that the purpose for carbon? chemical filtration, right?

carbon removes harmful chemicals from your aquarium. I never heard it made water clearer, just that it removed chems. ammonia and nites being the main chems...

mechanical filtration is for making water clear.

right?

I have some laying around for removing meds but havent added any meds for over a year now so I would have to say yes but also no

yeah, perfect for removing meds. carbon isn't going to remove many small (water clouding) particles, though. in fact, carbon is likely to cloud your water, if you don't rinse it extremely well.

I do use carbon because always used it, and seemed to help keep my water clear, and
don't see reason why I need to stop.

ive been using carbon but am now not going too anymore... ive got ro water and a canistor thats packed with matrix and prefilter
