RapidSheHamster, I can usually get some pretty big greenside darter pairs but I don't know how they would handle shipping.

You would want to use cold packs and overnight shipping at the very least; any methods of adding tons of oxygen to the water/bag, e.g. breather bags or directly adding oxygen from an oxygen tank, would greatly help, too.

I've run across several references to the breather bags for shipping - anyone know where to get some? Gawd, the greensides are soooo pretty would love to have some if we can all figure out how ppl (successfully) ship fish, lol!

Oh, also, I have tons of eelgrass available if anyone wants some easy aquatic plants and they're apparently edible cos my turtle loves to use them as a salad bar. LOL, but, they keep the water fresh and clear with a little help from our beloved fertilizer machines....

You should be fine then unless CA has some weird laws about selling non-native fishes that are native to other states.

Here's what I found:
It is unlawful to:
  • To possess, to introduce or import, transport, sell, purchase, offer for sale or barter the following live species in the Commonwealth: snakehead (all species), black carp, bighead carp, silver carp, zebra mussel, quagga mussel, European rudd, rusty crayfish, ruffe, round goby and tubenose goby.
  • To sell baitfish or fishbait taken from waters of the Commonwealth, except that licensed and authorized commercial fishermen may take and sell baitfish from Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay.
  • To sell baitfish or fishbait within the Commonwealth, or transport same out of the state, except by authorized and licensed commercial bait dealers.
  • To sell any species of fish, reptile (with the exception of snapping turtles) or amphibian taken from the Commonwealth.
  • To sell, offer for sale, purchase or barter any fish parts or fish eggs obtained from fish taken from waters of this Commonwealth including boundary waters. This prohibition does not apply to fish parts or fish eggs:
    (1) lawfully taken or sold or offered for sale by holders of Lake Erie commercial fishing licenses if the particular species of fish is authorized for taking by commercial licensees, or
    (2) those obtained from fish taken lawfully from waters outside of this Commonwealth.
  • To use or have in possession while on or along Commonwealth waters, nets larger than 4 feet square or in diameter except with a special permit issued by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.

So in short, it seems that caught native fishes from public land can be traded but not sold.

I'm going to get in contact with the PA Fish & Boat Commission soon to check on the legality of selling native fishes that one has bred themselves or collected from private property.

Did you ever call the PFBC about this? I emailed that guy back to find out about keeping candidate species and about trading. I have a smallmouth bass that I want to get rid of and I want to make sure it is legal first. I have some sunfish in mind that I would like to trade for. That part above where it says bartering is prohibited worries me. That to me means that fish can't be traded.

I have yet to receive a response.

Darn. I think this is going to require a phone call. If I get the response that I want, I am going to have them send me something in writing then. I want to find out within the next month or two so I can offload this guy.

BTW... Having a smallmouth bass sounds great on paper, but I wouldn't recommend it unless it is the only fish you have. They are way too aggressive with other sunfish and my pumpkinseed, bluegill, and black crappie are always hiding in the corner from him. This doesn't make for a nice tank environment.
