In my experience polypterus will do anythinf for a quite life and are very mild tempered fish. An angry jag will easily beat up your average ornate. But i guess if the ornate is a paricularly aggressive one it could turn the tables, but i think this would be incredibly unlikely.
As ever its all down to the individual fish.

IME ornates are the most aggressive bichir i had to move mine out of my old larger fish com tank he was the second smallest fish but owned the bottem of the tank he would make all my other bichirs and catfish includeing a artc which i moved out of its original tank cuz he riped out my rtc that was the same size...... The funy part is i got rid of all the other fish but stll got my bichir and now is in a turtle tank where he pushes around the turtles.....

ive got a 14 inch ornate bichir that attacked my 14 inch jag 3 times now and my jag ran the first 2 times then shoved him out of his territory the 3rd time. this is very unusual to me to think a ornate would attack a jag. i brought this up over in the polypterus forum and i got alot of responses the ornate will death roll the jag and kill it. i do not see this happening and just kind of wandered what you guys think over here in the central american forum. im going to have see it for my own eyes to believe it other then that i think the jag will just keep shoving him out of his area

They really said that "death roll" holy crude that is the funniest thing I have ever heard!!! Jags are not only more aggr. but beefy and strong-death roll that is freakin funny!

This is what I was thinking. Bichirs are a lot more active at night than most Jags. I think the Jag would receive massive injuries or possibly death if it was attacked by the Ornate while it was sleeping. On fair ground I think the Jag would kill the Ornate. I guess it's all up to which fish has the advantage at the moment. I hope you don't have to lose any one of those guys. They both look great.

Oh my god are you serious!!!
You guys are funny!!

The ornate gots armor dude my 17" in a tank with my 9" female map Turtle and my turtle is always walking on him and the ornate will bite it when it swims by........ Ornates have pretty strong jaws and good sized teeth..... the ornate can rip chunks out of the jag with no problem..... The ornate would use a death roll cuz its to big....

Yeah and a goldfish could take a shark with a "death roll"

And you seem bored and easily amused.

the ornate is a little larger then i guessed. he was laying perfectly across the front of the tank and i got a measurement of 15.5 inches.

dont bichirs have a very strong bite force? much stronger than cichlids. if thats the case i dont think the bichir would kill the jag but just take a chunk out of its face or something. i would probably agree that the jag would win...but itd be very hard to actualy kill the large bichir.

Currently have an Endi Endi with my cichilds. Had an Ornate but got thrashed by my CK and Red Oscar-that was awhile back.
