Who would you keep?/Who would you remove?

Probably depends on a few things like "are u getting a bigger tank someday, just not right this minute?" or "how much can the other fish/you tolerate as far as breeding aggression goes?"

I mean, a pair of convicts can be tough and ruthless, but I doubt even a pair could stand-up to your monsters. If you don't want them to breed, just get all females or 2 males or whatever. If you like red, get the females, if you like blue tints and trailer fins, go for males. It's a personal choice :) Even when I bred Jaguars, it was in a cichlid community, ALSO w/ breeding harems of JDs, 2 pairs of Jewels, etc.

Space + caves + weekly 50% water changes + high quality food = healthy breeding environment

i do plan to get a bigger tank in the future, but it may not be for a 2-3 years. this tank will be his home for the time being.

thank you for your insight about adding cryptohero. i was not familiar with them. some really nice looking fish in that species! i have a male convict in this tank currently that is just reaching the size to show nice streamers. thanks again for opening my mind to some new options!

So to bring it full circle, what I ended up doing was removing the the red devil and bleekeri. They now share a 35gal. with a divider in the middle. The argentea, convict, dempsey, 4 silver dollars, and pleco now house the 75 gal. (48x21x18)

I slightly adjusted the layout of the tank but the argentea his reclaiming his corner

looks great man, should be good for now until you find a bigger tank for the Devil n Bleekeri. Do they need a divider or were they the reason you were going to get rid of a fish?

Also, you ever think about stuffing that airstone down into one of the holes in that big ol' piece of driftwood? Or maybe placing it under the middle of a flat rock and move it level-it-off until bubbles come out equally on a few sides? I always liked to hide mine, what do you think?

The divider is just a precaution for their safety. The red devil is about 2 inches larger and is rather aggressive. The bleekeri was not too high up on the list in terms of dominance before the split. Also, the red devil was pretty beat up once I pulled him so I'm thinking some solo time may be the best bet for him. I like the air stone idea! I will need a longer hose though. If I put it amongst the rocks I hope it doesn't discourage the smaller fish from hiding in there like they do now...

I am biased towards Midas but looking at the one you have he is the least desirable. It is hard to pick out of the other 3 but the Bleeki is looking darn good.

I'll try to get a better/less blurry photo of the bleekeri. It really is a beautiful fish at only 3"-4". I hope I get the opportunity to see him grow
