exactly as Woofy says. The dynamics are ever changing.

I have no Viejas ( do not like them ) byut from what I see, Syns males are unsupportable.

I would add about syns... I added my bigger male at 3" in a tank with 11" brutes and he ha held his ground through his submissive tactics. Its hard to describe but ive always been successful in adding certain species at 3-4" to a tank of brutes. That male syn in now 6" and i just added his 4" lady to the mix. :) (but i dont recommend this) just sharing some experiences.

yeah I can imagine I will see some rather epic battles for supremacy as everything matures.

thanks for the advice, it does make sense to add smaller tankmates....as obviously anything of equal or near equal size would just be seen as a direct threat, will have to keep my eyes peeled for some suitable candidates of a smaller size, only problem there is getting males, then again I suppose buying several and then taking out any females once sexeable would be easy enough.

When females are ready for breeding, even if you don't tell them apart, the males will...you'll notice!

yeah I can well imagine, I have seen some festae and syns availiable as around 4cm babies so may buy some of each, although from what I have read festae get huge, maybe too big?

Do not mix Festaes in that mix of your's.

They get as big as Midas, but they take an inordinate amount of time to grow and, before that, are one of the shyest breeds you have. They will die in that mix unlessyou put in an a big bull already.

Too precious to experiment with. Get a big Mayan ( Uropthalmus ). I have one that copes very well.

yeah I had read that festae grow painfully slow! and were shy when young....will strike those off the list, I do love the dovii....and can get those too, but worry about their immense size, the largest I will be able to go size wise for the tank is a 6ft long 2ft deep height is not an issue....I wonder if this would be able to house a variety of brutes along with a male dovii?

I would stay on the Amphilophus wagon, mainly, Just.

I would not put a Dovii in there. You do not have such a big a tank and you ( DO NOT GET ME WRONG ) are running the risk of experimenting too much. Nor would i put Viejas in there.

I would have to disagree. If a larger vieja is added i dont see a problem. They can hold their own quite well from my experience. Conflicting info yes but its different experiences that need to be shared.

yeah I thought a Dovii would be a tad too much in the longhaul lol....

funny you mention this, as the red devil was in a sump tank with some same sized vieja and they all seemed fine, not sure which subspecies they were....but they were pretty much just a plain blue/grey with a very slight bit of pink on them around the gill area, I am not yet decided on what I will add, but the testosterone clock is ticking....so feel I really need to get whatever it is I decide within the next month or so, my other half absolutely loves the look of the syns!! and have to say I do agree with her....but have read up on them and as you said, they are apparently one of the more timid peaceful viejas...decisions decisions....I`m even looking into oddball fish, as I love the wierd and wonderful :)
