Someone's missing in my tank today and I haven't put the pieces together yet. I know I had 4 fish last night though, and today, just 3. Heres the suspects who were left; 1 tiny costa rican dovii who's 1.5in., and 2 Jags, one 1.5in. the other maybe 2in. My problem is I'm finding it hard to convince myself these little dudes chowed down on the other 2in. victim, also a Jag, and left no remains whatsoever. Bellies seem normal, no signs of foulplay etc.... Which lead me to believe it was a suicide, kamikaze tank jumper. The problem is again, no evidence. The ground surrounding the tank is corpseless. I would know, im meticulous with my stuff. This leaves me dumbfounded and the case remains open, anyone have any ideas what may have happened? here's the lineup. The first picture is the 3 jags, middle one is the dead one. Second picture is the dovii, third picture is a close up of the tiny dovii. On a side note, if anyone could take any guesses what the sexes of the fish were I would appreciate that too.

Check your filter box.

It could also be vanishing fish syndrome. I've been hit twice. Fish absolutely gone overnight, no predators or time for bones to degrade, just zapped out of existence mysteriously.

Yeah, I've only had this happen to me once but the strange thing is that it was in a peaceful community tank. I would have expected it in one of my cichlid tanks but it just didn't work that way.

are any of your fish looking decidedly bloated or fat?

I just checked the filter and no dice. No dogs or cats either. The mystery persists. I'm doing a water change now too and still nothing. He is the Kaiser Sose of Jags. Does anyone believe these little guys could have ate the guy that fast. They are well fed and would have had to do it out of sheer aggression. I would assume it was the biggest of the ones left. He's kind of a jerk so far and the other guy seemed to bug him. He's just sitting there right now, looking all shady. But he's no fatter than I left him, this is bugging me out.

Perhaps he was ill..passed on his own accord..and the others feasted?

Any decorations in the tank? Check very carefully for bits and pieces in them.

burried under a plant got sucked into the filter tube?

I had that happen once I never found any sign of it. I am now convinced it was an alien abduction.

Believe it or not I'm going to have to consider alien abduction. I've got one small pot in there and one small flower pot. (I'm aiming at breeding these dudes.) So there are no real decorations to speak of. I thoroughly examined everything for bits and came up with nothing. This sucks, I guess I will be able to tell if it jumped within the next 24 hours, but I'm almost 100 percent certain I went over everything. Anyone feel like venturing a guess about the sex of the remaining fish? Hoping the Dovii is a girl and for 1 male Jag. Don't worry either, I would be letting the fry back into the trade if they hybridize.
