How about we leave it alone. Just leave it as is. No contracts no permirs nothing. Anyone suggesting permits need to do some research.....

i think the nanny state has gone far enough, people should be free to buy what they wish. the main problem with this, as in all things, is who decides what is too small for a certain fish. ive been rudely told on other forums that a 90 gallon isnt big enough for bala sharks/ angels or whatever, with the end remark usually something like' in the wild these fish have x amount of territory to themselves'. the truth is even the most massive home tanks are never going to mimic nature properly. isnt it funny how the minimum size for a certain fish always seems to be the very size of the know it alls tank.

90 gallon isn't big enough for bala sharks...As a really active fish that grows to a beefy 1 foot, a four foot tank is just not enough space. You just aren't listening to good advice. Most of us may not be able to "mimic nature," but we can keep fish that aren't grossly inappropriate to tank size--and I mean dimensions, not just gallons.

IMO, the fault lies in several places.

1: The supplier, for regularly suppling fish that get too large for 99% of tanks out there (made up figure)

2: The purchaser, for buying a fish without research, or buying one they know they cannot keep

I'm not saying laws should be inacted, but I feel that if pet stores simply made big fish like redtail cats and pangassius special order only, the problem would be almost gone all together.

Oscars as tankbusters lol.
Well, considering Petsmart sells alot of oscars and the only 75 gallon tank in the store is covered with a half inch of dust, it definately qualifies. In addition, the information listed for adult size of most of the fish they sell is grossly underestimated and most of the staff isnt educated enough to guide a potential buyer away from putting an oscar in a 20 gallon tank, which most new fish keepers consider a relatively big tank.

Fault lies in the uneducated consumer just as much as the retailers and wholesalers. In the modern age where smartphones and computers are everywhere, there really is no excuse for a consumer to not take about 5 minutes to research the requirements of the fish before getting stuck in a tankbuster situation. As much time as folks spend on the internet nowadays its sad that they cant get off facebook or twitter long enough to put "Oscar" in their google bar and find out their 20 gallon just wont do.

YES. I really can't believe that people want to put restrictions on big fish. Horrible idea. Just leave it be, and if you don't like the fact that these fish can be purchased, don't buy them.

Its just that simple.

Blame lays at the feet of the buyer.

People's ignorance should not be excuses. Last thing we need is restrictions. Ban skaneheads ban pitbulls.

Lets just ban the stupid people.

...or at least neuter them all...

My dad used to keep Oscars in the 15g tank he had under his 20g community tank (where he kept fish like angels & blue gouramis). He could never figure out why, after a couple of years, they'd always jump out. Thank God I've learned better.
