  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1. Hydrolycus scomberoides

2. Hydrolycus armatus

3. Hydrolycus tatauaia

4. Hydrolycus wallacei

so i study some pics but i am not sure which one i have! Or the ones i have on order! Is the first one is the true one and the one we are looking for! Anybody know how to tell and esay way!

From what I've read they need HUGE current and a extremely high DO(dissolved oxygen) content to survive past 12" or so. There was someone a while back on aquaticpredators or on here I don't remember which that was thinking about doing a Payara only tank with a enclosed waterfall type setup that would pour down from about 2ft above the tank and then mount several power heads under where the waterfall hit the tank to have super high current and really good DO in the water from the waterfall. It might be worth trying if you've got a 240+ gallon tank that you could play with. I've also read that they need a really high food intake as far as nutrients and protein go at that size and your typical feeder fish are no where near able to provide that which is why unless your feeding high end feeders or some other type of supplements the fish sufferes from a nutritional defeciency and will eventually die ~Trent

Apparently Pirahna's work good :)

actually there are 3 types. the top one is the most common which is the one ur talking one foot mark but actually gets around 2 to 2and half feet.. the bottom one is the true payara the monster one.. thats the one i like but unfortunatly i have the top one.. hes about 7 inches now and hes in a 55 gallon tank with a powerhead airpump and 60 gallon filter.. im thinking about putting another powerhead in there for more current.

Looks like they like to eat Ps. If some one could score a couple breeding pairs of red bellies they would have a good food supply. Reds have a TON of fry and they grow FAST so.....well its a thought!

I have 3 of them bout 4 inches each! I am feeding them all kinds of feeder fish, danios, white clouds, guppys anything at the fish store! I have them in a amazon river setup, i have 1 side of a 90 with some power heads, and the side they all hang out is the otherside with heavily plastic vines all over!
What size do i start the waterfall at with all the powerhaeds? I was thinking they need to hang out when they are young and trasfer to heavy rapids when they reach 1 foot!
Its costing me 50 bucks a week to feed these guys, i know i am crazy but they are very cool fish!

By the way i am happy to say i have the bottom one in that picture, wow i better start getting ready to get a 240 awoooooooo!

sorry to steal the thread, but what's the red substrate that you're using? it looks sweet :)

who is woodysun-taiwan

if anybody get's comcast ondemand, there is a fishing show where a guy catches the payaras. they were caught in white water currents. this was no peaceful "ride in a canoe" river. they were basically rapids. it was actually a pretty good video. this would be an awesome project for some of our people here with massive tanks. load that baby up with moving water via powerheads/ waterfalls and grow up a monster and share pics.... this is your homework assignment MFKers.
