Why are Payara so hard to raise past 10 inches?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well like i said mine is the one on the top and he grew from about 21/2 inches to 7 in about 4 mos

here are the three species.. i have the one on top . id like to get all three. but im looking for the one on the bottom right now..

Very cool fish man ontop! I have a school of 5 the bottom pic! they are between 4 to 6 and half inches! From what i could tell they grow 1 inch and month with heavy feeding! Mine sometimes swim against the glass but i have added baboo plants to both sides of the tank and it looks cool and they have stopped. They are not really swimming really just hanging under plastic vines mostly so i am thinking about not adding more current now and waiting until the 8 to 10 inch mark before making the stream setup! Any more info would be helped!!

Have the 1 at the lower pic too. Cause he's in a comm tank, sure the fella will beef up real quick, cause he's the smallest in the tank. An inch a month sounds good.Survival of the fittest. Agression wise, u guys have any ideas when they are bigger?

Well i was thinking they were very peaceful but today the biggest one seems to chase the others around like he was territorial, have not seen any nipped fins though! There supply of albino tiger barbs hahahahahahha on special at petsmart i bought 50 of them has just ran out today and they are getting more aggressive i will search for feeeders for them this weekend. I am going to try a silverside on a glass stick and see if they would actually eat a silverside that would be the best healthy silversides i would totally fatten my boys up even if it took awhile to get them all a silverside! I have seen large payara on fishing shows about 3 to 4 feet. Their habitat is a very fast flowing river with rapids. and probably slightly colder water about 70. They will only eat live foods and hit stuff on the surface like a tarpon. They were catching them on top water plugs. Awesome

Unfortunately of the 7 original I have only 2 left. There were a couple dead a day after recieving them, but the rest were fataly harrased. The last 2 seem to be going strong though.

Well bro good to hear from you! What was bothering them, the bigger Payaras or other fish! They are really fragile i would say because they are always just hanging under plants not swimming very much! Most fish would mess with them. the only other fish in my Payara tank is a black ghost knife and things seem to be going cool. At night he just ignores them plus when the Payara sees the ghost coming they just get out of his way! How big are your 2 that lived bro and what size tank do you got them in. Do they chase each other around any man and have you gotten them top eat any frozen shrimp or silversides, mine only eat feeders big expensive feeders!

Lost the last 2. I guess that my gar ate the last one, coulda been him all along. The gar is around 11 inches, and thought a 5 inch Payara would have been safe. Crap. The thing is that the gar doesn't mess with anything else. Even my 4 inch Datnoids.

Side note. I never got them away from rosies. They would not hit anything dead or pellets.

Ohhh yaa i could of told you the gar would of done it, datnoids fight back, Payara from what i seen are not very stocky and only ferocios when they eat, i seen my big one eat a huge swordtail it was amazing the sword was 3 inches long and he is 7 inches! Other than that they are wimpy! Well can you get rid of the gar and try again man i think they are in season, i have 10 on order 5 red fins and 5 regular!

The Gar is here to stay. It took me quite awhile to find him. He's a Tropical from SharkTank.

However, I will be building another 600g tank in about 8 months. Maybe this one will house some Payara.
