Why are we still keeping fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pets in general make no sense on that logic... I keep fish and other pets because I don't like people lol... other then a very small group of humans.. I prefer the honesty of animals ect over human companionship in general. imo pets fill some void in all of us. and each person has their reasons for keepings pets.. I have found fish people in general far more introverted then dog people ect... I like to sit infront of my tanks in peace and quiet and watch them just "live" .. I went w/out a tank for maybe 2yrs... and in the end dug out a 5 gallon and got a few guppies for my cpu desk because I missed that slice of "life" that fish bring to my life. we also have 2 cats and a horse.. hubby grew up on a farm.. having pets is part of what makes our house a home.

If I didn't enjoy feeding, caring for them I wouldn't keep them. Growing up we had a lot of pets so I know what animals work for me, Fish are one of those that fit the bill.

The "Joy" they bring our family, in particular watching our 2yr old interact with the cats and the fish is priceless... they pay for themselves in this respect. All comes down to what makes you happy in life, and what brings you and yours joy. Nothing else replaces having a bad day and relaxing infront of a tank with one or both the cats piled on or around me.

I had to use google to see what introverted means and found this article. It's pretty interesting. http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...roverted&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari&ct=clnk .

I can defently see this with long term fishkeepers. I will go play basketball or snowboarding with my friends. Once we finish my friends will want to get food and play video games, I just will go home and do a water change. I agree that aquarium maintaince allows me my alone time.

So I don't derail the topic to much I feel I am already commented to many if my fish. I have had some for 10 years and I am only 26. My jack dempsey has been with me for as long as I can remember and survived some pretty crappy conditions (not anymore). It will be wrong to get rid of him.

Lol I wish water change took 15 mins whats your secret?

No No, you know what I'm saying! Obviously water changes vary from person to person but in the end it doesn't take that long! Far less time then taking a dog on a walk, putting new shoes on a horse, etc.

In my case, it can give a small sense of responsibility to one of the least mature individuals that has ever walked the face of God's green earth without imposing upon another Human being.

I have never for a millisecond considered any female that I have dated feelings. I go fishing on my boat, to concerts or anywhere at any time I like. I have on SO many occasions gone the don't let the door hit you . . . on the way out.

I like to give myself one major double thumbs up however! Unlike the extreme vast majority of those like me, I have a sense of fair play, and I have never gotten married or brought children into this world.

My fish are my "kids" and my tanks and ponds are my wives!

It felt great taking a 90G and a 50G to the dump last week and aggressively bashing the bajeebas out of the glass with a sledge hammer as it went into the bin with one of the two free dump passes from Maryland property tax. I am considered uber responsible for busting up my "wives" in this fashion.

^ Just kidding! I have no good answer to the question.:headbang2

It is possible to just love the company of animals. I have 2 kids a dog and 20+ tanks. I coach my boys baseball teams but beyond my time with my sons I enjoy sitting with my dog in my fish room havin a beer and watching my fish,. All I am saying as a fishkeeper for over 35 years there is an ebb and flow but it always gravitates back to the soltice of the satisfaction of being a fish keeper brings. My 2 cents.

Its a piece of Wild untamed Nature in my room. well not my molly and guppy breeding tanks but my bichir/wolf/barracuda tank is insane to watch. especially when I dump a good 20 2 inch mollys in there. I'm not a sadist, I do feel guilt for these animals but its akin to watching the discovery channel to me, if these predators weren't doing it in my room, they would be in the wild.

Its the Food Chain in all its brutal glory in Miniature.

also ancient fish (fossil fish, dino fish whatever) fascinate me to the point of I'm getting my ornate bichir tattooed on my leg. Anything having to do with water really and I'm all over it, diving wakeboarding surfing swimming fishing kayaking boating all of it. I love the water and after keeping them for a few years, I can't imagine not having any bichirs

it all started from my love of fishing
and my parents gave me an odd name, "Cod" so yeah i guess im destined to be around fishes

I got my first glass cage for Xmas 1970 after spending time watching the aquarium that my friends parents had. I just never considered stopping. I upgraded wives a few years back to a lady that couldn't care less about the hobby, but she doesn't care that I keep taking over more of the house. It is just something I do.

that is partially to blame for my own obsession, spending hours trailing small tributaries of Lake Erie to find that perfect fishing spot. I just can't imagine childhood or life w/o fishing or keeping fish nowadays.

another reason I left out in my fist post is similar to MonsterMini, I cannot stand most people in my area. They are materialistic money grubbing pigs for the most part, I can't stand the whole "oh look at my new ipad" or "look at the new BMW my daddy got me". It doesn't help I live in one of the richest areas of NY but nobodys salary in my house exceeds 40k. This has made me feel so so sorry for these people, they just can't live w/o all those fancy toys, when me, all I need is my fishing equip, my aquariums, and my dogs and I'm good
