why ask for stocking tips?

Rodger I have a few ideas for ya but I'll sit this one out and let some of the creepy basement dwellers chime in.

I asked the same question on another forum and got slaughtered as a know it all for asking this LOL. Anyways the main thing I got from those that were helpful when answering the question is 2 reasons.

1. lack of knowledge, either new to the hobby or new to a type of fish with compatibility questions.
2. bored and looking for a new direction but not sure where to go.

But I am with you I just don't have enough tanks to have all my dream aquariums. What I find more interesting and see all to often is when people ask stocking questions and then argue until they find someone to give them the answer they want.

I understand when someone doesn't know which direction to go and they give a couple of examples of the directions they would like to go. But if I asked what should I put in my 75 gallon and everyone says African cichlids yet I really don't like them should I still do it? If someone's asking for help they should give a little info such as that. Not a blanket statement What should I put. But that's just me.

Lol, glad someone else brought that up...

I will be done with my 600 in the next few weeks. What should I put in it? I was originally going to get a trio of guppies but found out they would get ground up when they came back from my sump. Any other good ideas?

If you are building a 600 you already have a plan for what's going in it. If not the fish already in another tank

I like to go to all the LFS I can and see with my own eyes whats out there. and keep checking back to see newly received fish. and if people are suggesting bichirs for your 20 gallon tank I suggest you do not take there advice. ;) you would think someone could figure out a small 20 gallon tank could only house small fish but there are a lot of dumb people out there so maybe asking advice is best

Like I said, that was an example haha. Bichirs were the first things that popped in my head and I'm pretty sure most people on here know that a 20g is too small for bichirs, maybe used to be a growout only :)

Yeah, I already have what goes in it. My problem is, it may be overstocked once things get grown up. I have somewhere between 15-18 ft of Bichirs for the bottom and my Leitchardi aro for the top. Bunch of stuff in between. I just have to restock what will get emptied for the 600. Maybe that trio of guppies........

Asking to have your stocking list confirmed by other aquarists is a good way to gather opinions if there would be any problems, not to mention the reasons above. Also, for a lot of fishes out there the minimum tank sizes listed are just that; minimums, and may mistakenly convince someone that they have an appropriate tank when it is just barely adequate.

I don't think you guys are reading this post the way it was intended. Giving a list of fish you would want is a great idea, saying "what should I put in my 90 gallon" bad idea.

I like when people ask. It helps prevent bad stocking mistakes.

I always welcome questions where I can share advice and experience.
