Why Bearded Dragon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've always wanted one. If I could ever get a reptile...I think I would start with a Bearded Dragon.

As with most things the bigger the cage, the better! A 50g aquarium seems very small to me! An adult would barely be able to turn around in a tank that size! I believe they need somewhere around 8SQ feet of space. But I could be wrong.

http://www.bearded-dragons.com/ They have a nice forum over there.

I love beardies. I have had several chances to adopt them but somenoe else always seems to get them before I do... Like I need another giant lizard..LOL

This is the kind of situation where you go with what you really want. Expierence can be gained and if you are willing to do your research, have an open mind to advise and use your resources (Online Forums, Books, ETC) you should have no problem with being a bearded parent.

HeahterM, I thought the 50 gallon is too small for it to keep it for life when he posted the 50 gallon thread, considering it is 18" wide.

It would make a great growout, but they still need 20"-24"+ width in the end.

yes, they would have to have more room, and watch out for the german giants- they get big. My favourites are the blood reds, the extreme yellow morphs, like the sunburst, and i really like the leucistics too. Some nice specimens of each can be found (and i guess bought) from here. http://www.dragonsdenherp.com/htm2/dragons.htm

I understand, so I would need a bigger tank to house a Bearded Dragon. What about the different morphs? Are they any that remain small enough for a 50 gallon tank? Thanks for the link Dova.:)

It depends on what your intention is. It would make a great growout vivarium until you can get a new one for it.

Morphs dont really vary in size. German giants however, grow to be huge in comparison.

Rankins dragon, pogona henrylawsonii only grow to about 1/4 the size of the standard inland beardie. They can be housed as a pair in a 50 gallon all their life. Can be hard to acquire though. I kept one for a number of years until he passed of old age. He was very old when I got him, someone donated him to the zoo I was working for at the time. Great pet, never got bigger than 9 inches snout to tail length. there are some pics here.

I personally think while they still have great personalities, they're pretty stinky as lizards go, and they require more room/maintenance than most are willing to give them. On top of that, I find them commonplace and droll; I mean, practically everyone and their brother has one, so that alone makes them lose all appeal from me.

Just my $.02
