Why choose freshwater?

Why not?!
the fish that you can keep are awesome. the tank set-ups are equally as attractive as salt water***If freshwater is your thing** if not this will be an argued statement*L* ive had both. both are good, but the freshies always seem to hold my attention a bit more.

I can't get into reef tanks. To make one look good costs more than I'm willing to spend. I've only seen a few that I really like. Most of the time they look dirty to me.

I agree with the others, freshwater is just easier and cheaper.

You can set up a monster freshwater tank fairly cheaply, large tank, heaters, some basic lights and a homemade stand and sump filter. Stock it with baby monsters that are cheap at any pet store or rescue some tankbusters from friends with small tanks and you are good to go.

Then maintainance is MUCH simpler, clean the glass, vacum the bottom, clean the filter and do a big water change each week.

I have to admire the people that have set up good marine reef tanks, they must be pretty dedicated (obsessed?). But spending more on a single fish than my whole tank setup costs. And then having to run a NASA style life support system to keep them alive. Not for me :grinno:
Give me a big freshwater tank with some easy care monsters anyday :headbang2

Cheers

Ian

FW tanks can definitely be kept with a 'smoother' look to the layout.

Plus, I prefer the look of plants and drift wood over live rock.

Winstonk, just a heads up... i think you ment aro as in arowana, not aero as in the chocolate bar.
Yeah, I did, Thanks! I just didn't know how to spell it. I'm going to school for aviation so my spelling instinct just tried to spell aeronautics.

It's funny to see that there is a trend of freshwater here. Personally I prefer the vibrance and complexity of the salt water tanks. But I understand the positions of many of you out there.

I've seen some big salties at my lfs, but they have an incredible supplier for both fresh and salt. Most of the puffers and triggerfish they carry are at least 10". There was also that monsterous remora I post in the hoto lounge.

Simple reason is because salt water tanks are a lot harder to maintain and corral is uber expensive!!!!!

I do love those Aero bars!!!!!!

salt water is crazy expensive a few of my fish friends are strictly saltwater, and make fun of me because i only do freshwater, my friend has put about 3000 into his saltwater tank and its 30 gallons, think about what you could do with all that money for freshwater

i like the personalties of FW fish better. The SW (especially reef) fish I have seen seem always to be scared of their owners.

I'm with Rally on this one, the fish are gorgeous but the tanks always look dirty.
