Why did my fish die?????

So, Im getting mixed signals here....Should I change the water or not? Like I said, I just seeded the filters and the water is clearing up....
If your new water without prime has ammonia in it, then don't change water.
What's your filter and what did you do? normally large water changes without disturbing the bacteria colony will not cause a ammonia spike.

Ok thanks. Im running a xp3 and an fx5. I rinsed the trays out and must have gotten too much cholrine in the filters that killed the bateria. Ill check tomorrow. Thanks for the inputs
Sorry to hear about your loss. If when you rinsed out the filters you used regular tap water instead of tank water then that could have been the problem. If not, then maybe the mascara barbs are just a less hardy fish.

how long ago where the barbs added? and where they Qted first ? while i agree it was likely the cleaning.. since you did not do anything out of the ordinary, ide cross off a few other potentials before pointing fingers. as long as your ammonia stays less then 4ppm i wouldnt do a water change, unless your other fish are showing stress signs... bacteria need ammonia and o2 too thrive, but past a certain point they dont. not to mention exposure to high levels of ammoniavwill damage your fishes gills.
I agree with monsterminis. It COULD be that the tap water killed off some bacteria, and your other fish were just used to it. Eitherway, retest tomorrow and take action then. My hope is that it should be back to normal before you know it.
Has happened to me b4 too. To me the dirtier the filter looks, the more beneficial bacteria. Too much cleaning is like have a new tank again.
