You will buy lots of fish and lots of tanks, then you will get burned out and drop the hobby, seen it many times

Buy a few tanks and a few fish you really like and ENJOY them, if you make it work you will burn out

I have one 240 with dovis and a 30 gallon with a big JK, I am happy

I think that you are right. Thats what bothers me. I'm worried about getting a bit burned out in the long run. I felt like cleaning all of my tanks out a few days back when my most expensive Flowerhorn kicked the bucket. I like my 125 because of the high end filteration. Very little work involved with that tank. I talked my wife into bringing the 180 into the living room, but well see. She wants me to buy a new 125 instead since the 180 is so wide.

Do you buy fish before you have somewhere to put them or do you buy them and then work it out somehow?. . . .

I so much know the feeling! When does enough become too much or why do I have to chose "either/or", I want both!!!:naughty:

I started out by acquiring tanks, gradually working up to a 150. Now I have excess tanks and I give them away or trade them off for something to stock with. Once I had the tanks I could then pick from my wish list. I finally hit a point of saying no more tanks. Now when the last are stocked I can say no more fish either!

mate i think everyone starts off like this. it's kinda of a process to figure out which fish you wanna end up keeping long term. for me i started with oscars then africans and now i'm back to CA/SA. DEFENITELY the best to fish to keep

I have the same addiction
I've gone through my fair share of fish
now I focus on keeping the ones I have for life (their life)
I no longer think of them as I once did
more in the relm of dog or cat true pets
it's hard to resist new & different fish
now it's new & different decor & equipment haha!
less guilt

fish keeping is one hell of a drug :D

I pretty much just kept oscars, JDs, plecos, and CKnife fish since I was young. About 8 months back I started to mess with Flowerhorns, which I still like, but would rather go to more pure bred species. I setup a 125 as a CA tank and I'm hooked on those. I like the personalities that most of them demonstrate and they are very active. The ones that I have chosen seem to get along ok in a community tanks, which is a change from FHs. There are so many CA/SAs that I'm thinking I need to dedicate atleast a couple more 100+ gallon tanks too. I will still keep my red monkey FH, Oscars and Clown Knife. I really don't need to keep 6 55 gallon tanks with only 1 FH in each tank. Its a waste of space and really one FH is enough for me.

if youre lookin for a bad *** pure bred, get an amarillo, well actually get a breeding pair for your 180;) rapps has a wild caught 10-12" breeding pair for $250. if i had a 180 id get them. amazing fish to keep in your living room.

There is a huge difference between fishBUYERS and fishKEEPERS, you cannot buy every new "fad" fish and sell it when it is no longer cool on the boards. Those folks burn out, they do not love the fish, they love the attention they receive.

I started a thread to discuss the difference it was closed, I never heard why, I asked one on the mods/admins and never got a response.

Think about it like dogs, if you bought every new dog out there eventually you would be soon overun and the dogs would suffer, that is what happens with lost of fish, it just never makes the news like dog abuse does.

I myself started just like most. 1 tank, then two, now four. The money isnt really a problem, but I do always keep in mind the amount of work that is involved , and I always purchase fish that will "mingle" well with my others. I'm a sucker for rescues, and new fish as well. I do feel a little burned out on the hobby atm, and will be building a pond next summer to cut down on the amount of time involved in maintenance which should rejuvenate the "flame" between myself and this fish keeping addiction.
