Why do my Oscars keep dying?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I also feed hikari jumbo food sticks. other tanks mates are two plecos one is 8" the other is 3"

55 for oscars that size is fine. Buy a test kit, test the water, post results.

When i started, i was doing monthly water changes and seeing by cichlids die of hole in the head was not pleasant. Instead, do weekly 40% water changes, you'll be amazed how fast they grow.

I would get rid of one of your plecos, you don't need two in that sized tank.

Also consider upgrading to 75 gallons.

A laundry list I know but for now, do weekly large water changes coupled with a gravel vacuum. You'll like the result.

Of all cichlids, an Oscar would be the one that it is most important to do more frequent water changes. They are tough fish and will live through about anything, except infrequent water changes. I do 30% every week with mine. Oscar's are the slobs of the cichlid world and waste is a big issue with them.

25 -50% once a MONTH..there lies the problem ...high nitrates......try 60% a WEEK

yeah, i failed on my 1st try on keeping an oscar but i succeed on my 2nd by doing water changes 50%-60% every weekend. in just a week his poop can fill up a pail. o.o also try to interact to him more, would not make him bored all the time.

those plecos are biologically filthy too. If I wanted to keep an oscar healthy, would not keep it in a 55G with 2 plecos. ditch them, increase water changes and don't over feed the O.
