why do people hide there tanks.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My 300 and 700 wouldn't fit through my door. lol Thats why they are in the garage. Plus I think it is better because I have had more than one tank overflow or a big fish splash a lot of water out. It doesn't matter if there is water on the garage floor, it flows right on out.

Mine are in the basement because:

a) potential flood risk, when my new 125 exploded, all the water went straight down the floor drain
b) they're not decorations
c) the weight of over a 1000 gallons is not something I'd like to test on the second floor

i have mine in the back room because of lack of space. i have so many tanks that i had to put them somewhere. i have a 46 in the livingroom but only bc there is not space in my fishroom.

I have 2 show tanks that are on display in the house. However, people would look at me funny if I had the 300 gallon rubbermaid in the living room. Thats why it is in the garage.

I think the arguments are valid on both sides. If it isn't a decoration then why bother making it as beautiful as people do, and why even have a glass tank instead of a cheaper solution? Yes it's more than a painting on the wall. It is a home for animals that we have all chosen to keep, AND it is also a piece of our own artwork. Of course flooding, weight, and space are all very valid reasons for the basement or garage but why not a FINISHED basement where the tanks could be enjoyed? I have my 2 larger tanks in my bedroom. Not exactly public but I get to enjoy them there. I have a small tropical tank in my living room and everyone loves to watch it. I would love to get a true monster going in the living room but first I would have to reinforce the floor joists and probably run some plumbing. If it were in the basement it would be so so much simpler but if no body can enjoy it what's the point.

Well my 1500 wouldn't fit anywhere but the basement. And as for why not finished basement there are plenty of reasons. Those with rather large tanks spend mad money on them making even less funds for finishing the living space. I have a decent display room for mine but it is more for me to enjoy it's not like I invite people over to see my fish so where it is isn't as important to me.

I have two living rooms. One is a smaller room in the front of the house where the front door is. I have my 90 gallon and 125 gallon in there, with a small antique couch. You can see the tanks from the street as you drive by (as long as the lights are on.)

In my kitchen/dining room area (it's actually really big wish I could show everyone my floot plan) I have a 56 tall tank that's fully planted. You can also see this one from the street if the light is on, it's directly behind an opening from the front living room through to the kitchen, where the area opens up into my big living room in the back of my house. I also have a 30 gallon next to my fridge, that's a hospital/quarantine tank.

In the big living room, I have my brackish 55 long, with a planted 10 gallon next to it, and another hospital/quarantine 10 gallon and 5 gallon bucket sitting on an old aquarium hood on the other side of the living room...

My house was built on a concrete slab fortunately, but I don't have any tanks upstairs, or in any of the bedrooms down stairs. I do, however have a tank in the "herp room" that houses my 6.5 ft boa, and many other snakes and tarantulas.

Our "office" is a spare bedroom, which is really just used for storage, and the extra toilet when both me and my husband have indian food for dinner!

EDIT:: sorry for the tangent, I'm a drunk a bit.

I used to have a 125 gallon planted tank and I didn't hide it. It was in my bedroom and the center piece of it. here is some photos of it.
