Why do people say hybrids are bad?

I believe it is good to do hybrids as long as you do it responsibly. Not throw them in ponds and sell them for what there not. If no one ever tried hybradizing fish then we would never have alot of very unique and beautiful fish we have today. Yes you have to look at more then color, fins and ect. The health of the fish is just as important which includes avoiding mutation if possible and genes that make a fish more subseptable to diseases. But sometimes that takes time to over come. Again responsibly of the breeder i believe is number one. He of she determines what does or doesn't happen in there breeding program. That goes for non hybrid breeding to.

I think the excuse of LFS selling breeds that aren't identified correctly should have no place in this argument. There's plenty of threads on here of people that score rare fish for cheap due to being mislabeled. It's part of the game. Can't complain if you get delt a bad hand. You should do your research.

An example of a "bad" hybrid is the "low quality blood parrots" that have been popping up lately... Instead of having a inside out mouth they can close their mouth and cause SERIOUS harm to other fish.

And depends on the hybrid in many cases. Hybrids themselves aren't necessarily bad, but some irresponsible breeders have made it virtually impossible to find pure strains of certain species. Midas, devil, Midevil is a good example. My buddy bought what was sold to him as Trimac. Turned out to be a low grade flowerhorn.

+1 Its not that hybrids by themselves are bad its irresponsible breeders and owners that have given hybrids a bad name.

How it is relevant to the question? Flowerhorns and red texas can close their mouth and cause serious harm to other fishes.

I usually like the hybrids but I don't like if someone is purposely hybridizing rare or endangered species with another species. A little while ago someone created a hybrid between Characodon audax and Characodon lateralis on purpose. Both species are rare in the wild and in the aquarium trade too.

I agree with what most people have said. Personally I don't really like hybrids, but I also don't really mind them overall. My issue is when someone sells a fish as something that it is not.

I understand LukeOscars comment, but when fish are juvies it is almost impossible to correctly differentiate between some species. This is why it is important to correctly label fish and know what they are. Obviously the issue can be avoided through buying adults, but then you must usually spend a lot more money and I like to buy babies and grow them out to adulthood.

What is natural? If you look at things through evolution, everything is bastardized. Hybrids don't bother me, but I agree with JC1119... too many hacks playing Frankenstein out there. I like FH but absolutely hate parrots. To each their own
evolution is natural, domestic breeding isn't 'natural' in many eyes, i dont get what u dont get
