why do people think oscars are wimps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have an oscar and a jack dempsey of roughly the same size (about 6 inches) in a 55 gal together. And the oscar always lets the dempsey know whos boss. not enough to seriously hurt him but enough that he gets first pick on food and territory

you need a bigger tank. at least 90 gallons. Not trying to be bossy. good Luck!!!!

I wouldn't say wimpy mine I have had for 4 years I have him in my 240 with a 8 inch tem pbass and a 6 inch plezona pbass and he just uses his size. But he will tear up some fake plants and drift Wood and the magnet cleaner . They never have a chance with him haha. But each fish is different

In my experience Oscars are just cowardly bullys.

Mine will have a go at bullying most fish but if the fish stands up for itself they totally submit.

After a few months of having my Oscars I introduced a Gold Saum which was about a third the size of the Oscars and they tried bullying it but it soon established who was boss and kept the two Oscars pinned into a corner of the tank (5x2x2 and bearing in mind the Oscars were about 5 inches so I don't think space was the issue) to the point it would take scales off them if they dared leave the corner. I wanted the Oscars to stand up for themselves but they wouldn't so in the end I let the Gold Saum go. I still wonder to this day if I should have let the Oscars go but they were my first big Cichlids and the kids liked them.

Once the Oscars had reached a decent size (12-13 inches) I introduced my Jag which again was considerably smaller (6ft tank this time) but after a while the same thing happened again, total submission to the smaller Jag to the point that the Jag had them pinned in the corner and could nip at them at will and the O's would just sit there and take it, no hint of a fight back which you may get from most cornered animals. So I gave the Jag his own tank and the Oscars spend their time picking on non Cichlids like the Yellow Fin and Pink Tail Chalceus I had to let go and my Fire Eel I had to let go and now it is just Oscars and Silver Dollars and when they are not chasing the SD's they fight with each other, lay infertile eggs and then fight with each other some more.

I want to enjoy my Oscars but they seem to spend all of their time making life awkward for me, maybe I would do better with one Oscar?
