Hello; At a local wal-mart the other day I was at the service desk. They have a rack of male bettas in the small containers. A couple of large women with two small girls were at the betta rack. One of the girls was doing the "mommy I want one" routine in that shrill little girl voice that preceedes a tantrum if they do not get their way. The mother dragged her away briefly, but she ran back and got one.

Moments later i finished my business at the service desk. As i turned to leave the second little girl had dragged her woman (mother?) back and picked out a betta. I was passing the checkout lanes and overheard the young teller trying to explain that the two male bettas cannot be in the same aquarium. I felt that I could sense a decision point. To buy the two fish and avoid a meltdown from the two kids or not .

I chimed in saying that the bettas would fight to the death if put together. That they would tear each other up. That they are called fighting fish for a reason.

I left before finding out the choice. My guess being that they bought the fish to avoid the tantrums. ((I also got the sense they could have been from one of the impure neighborhoods in the area. Maybe I am wrong??)

The clerk was trying to do the right thing.

I hate tantrums just as much as anyone but its sad that they probably didnt care and got two males. Missed parenting moment imo.

My son wants all sorts of monster fish but i took the time to educate him and would take him to the "cooler" lfs and show him how big some fish could get.

No lie at the age of 5 he would tell the meat heads that worked in petland that x fish gets way too big for a tank. We once found a TSN in a 20 gal. The girl that worked there says to him ask your dad to buy it for you lmaoooo he turns and point blank said "thats a tiger shovel nose, they need like a swimming pool to live in". Girl said wow i didnt know what type of fish that was....

Hello; Yes this particular incidence is sad, although likely very common in some form or another.

My take on the bettas is that most are condemed due to their nature. Two things work against them.
They can exist in absurdly small containers of water due to being able to take oxygen from the air. Slow ammonia poisoning ??

The other being their fighting instinct. They produce a good number of offspring and each male must be housed separately.

My guess being that few make it to good conditions.

I know someone who had a betta in a bowl and i was going to give them a 2.5 gallon tank, but they let the bowl dry up and the betta died. He was not a very responsible fishkeeper.

NICE. It always makes me happy to see instances where billions of "parents" can learn a few parenting tricks from us Young-bucks.

I have also noticed that most of the people who buy fish at walmart haven't done any reasearch and don't know anything about fish. I do not think that walmart should sell fish. The fish are overpriced also. You can get an ich infested feeder guppy for $4.99 and you can get a healthy feeder guppy for ten cents at the LFS.

4.99 for a feeder guppy? That's like asking the guy who cuts my lawn to pay ME.

Yep. All have ick and usually about half of them are dead just floating around.

My walmart was pretty well kept up for a walmart. There were only 5-10 dead fish which is way too many but not a lot for a walmart.
