Why do you enjoy breeding?

I've never got into breed any fish because I feel like that petstores have enough stock.

But everyone seems to be breeding something but me. Is there something I am missing out on?

breeding is something all hobbyist must experience....The beginners luck thing is what always starts up most fish keepers onto breeding...........Then they get into finding websites about fish and start reading that their are many variants of the fish they have accidently bred........Then they get into asking questions online and goin to the stores and seeing what equipment/food they can start with......All this walking around and information loading leads to a euphoric sense of wonder about breeding fish............

interesting to watch mom and dad, I trade my JD in at the LFS for store credit when they of size, its a win win, folks getting pure stock healthy juvie JD, I get free stuff, mostly live fish food, super meal worms and frozen blood worms. also free fish for the wife's tank but not often.

I was just curious if I was missing out on something special. I couldn't care less about money.

You guys said pretty much all the answers I expected.

Like I posted, I don't intentional set up my fish to breed nor do I try to salvage the offspring, but it is cool to watch the process/behavior

I find as a rule, I don't like to keep just one individual of a species, and especially if its really a great specimen. I feel its almost my duty to allow that DNA of that fish to get passed along.
If I have a pair, and one dies, I would rather give the remaining individual to another aquarist that is breeding the species, if I can't find replacement.
And usually when I end up with fry, I end up giving most away, unless they are wanted far away, and then I ask for just enough to cover the hassle, time expended and expense of shipping.
I just had a Tomocichla sieboldii kill its mate, so tomorrow its going to the local aquarium society auction, with a bunch of A. ceibal fry.

For me, its about nature. All living things have a few basic needs. The drive to reproduce is a big factor. Unwanted babies can just be used as feeders, so space and/or rehoming isnt really a problem with fish like it is with other animals. Courtship displays can be fascinating and for some species, courtship is the most interesting part of their natural behavior. IMO, there really isnt anything more interesting(or natural) than a mated pair defending a nest and herding babies around the tank. Breeding colors are certainly the most beautiful for many species. Also, most species will only breed when conditions are correct, such as a temperature fluctuation. But many will not breed if water chemistry is off, so success can also be a measure of how well you are keeping a particular species. I also find it extra rewarding to point out a beautiful full grown specimen and say that I didnt buy it, it was born here.

i find it quite maternal lol, get home from work and check on my babies lol!-) its great watching them grow and start to look like actual fish, start to get their personalitys.. you then also get the pick of the litter if you want him, there will always be a few that grow way faster than the rest and these are usually sold privately by the breeders or kept or if they do get to the lfs bought first.
