Why do you think some members overstock American cichlids ?

The voluntary crowding in nature is not the same as artificial crowding in a fish tank. A bullied fish in nature will just leave the crowd and escape injury or death. A bullied fish in a fish tank has no place to go. So over crowding never occurs in nature, only in a fish tank.

With frequent water change and powerful filtration, you can crowd more fish than water in a tank and can still maintain good water quality. If there is tanquility in the tank with only sporadic skirmish, it is crowding but not over crowding, and can be a pleasing set up. However, if the fish are constantly chasing one another other, even though the targets are spread out, it's over crowding. The fish are stressed, the weaker fish will never show their potential and are vulnerable to sudden gang murder. I am not a masosadist, and don't find a set up with fish constantly chasing one another pleasing.
