Why does Everyone like Silver Dollars?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't have any silver dollars at this time but I'm rather partial to the red hooks and would like to keep a group some day...Roger,lets see those big ol ugly 17 year olds.
The biggest one in back is one of them. I had five. They were rescues from an estate. The gal I got them from new the age because her mom got them the year she graduated. I've had them a little over a year. Two died right after I got them. Clean water shock I think.

Those 3 bigguns are about a foot long.

I have 3 red hooks and 5 Metynnis maculatus. I had to move the red hooks to a separate tank because I couldn't get any food to the bottom dwellers or less aggressive feeders which by the way is just about everything. The red hooks are OK with my silver arowana because it eats from the top and plows trough them. The maculatus aren't as crazy but still steal food, just not as voracious and insatiable as the red hooks. Cool fish but you really need to know what you're getting not all species are suitable for anything but large tanks with aggressive fish that can compete with these bottomless pits with fins..........

Ive got 3 red hook silver dollars and although skittish, are a great addition to a large predator tank, there tank mates are 1 silver arrowana, 1 obi Ray, 1 red tiger Oscar and 1 geophagus altifron, feeding times take a while as everything has to be full, including mouths before I can even think of feeding the Ray! Nothing bothers them and they keep there distance from everything else.

I actually don't care for them.....they've just never appealed to me visually.

i see. i unfortunately fail to see the glamour in these fish. that may be because they seem similar to discus and i like the coloration of discus. My silver dollars are still juvies. about the size of a mcdonald sauce dip cup. they are with my bd male. soon to be in my pup tank. My silver dollars also dont really school. maybe 3 of them school. but the other 4 are all randomly seperate. well until its feeding time that is.

X2

I've never owned any. I have no desire to own any. Hearing that they are skittish, turns me off even more.

I had some tinfoil barbs before that were skittish, that everytime I entered the room they went nuts. Ending up getting rid of them early in my downsizing period.
