Why does Everyone like Silver Dollars?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I originally got mine to draw my other fish out from their constant hiding. I really didn't care for them at first but they are growing on me. Seems like they grow an inch a month though. I think mine are Metynnis Hypsauchen.

I simply think that they're gorgeous animals. I love the look of a bunch of little chrome nuggets schooling around in my tank!

How can I tell which variety of silver dollars I have? I got mine from Petsmart, so probably whatever is most common. Their lower fins are red, and they have a few faint spots each, so I think they might be spotteds? They're new, they don't want to come out and be photographed.
To add to the list of reasons why they're cool fish: they're durable. My longear tried to eat one of them when they were first added- I think he thought the dollars were edible. Didn't hurt it in the slightest, despite the longear being quite a lot bigger than it. The dollar scooted away and then was perfectly fine.

Most likely you have Metynnis maculatus. Look those up to see if they match.

Metynnis argenteus are really common as well, but I'm inclined to agree that its Mytennis maculatus as well.

Looks like it's the maculatus, thanks. The argenteus look similar, but their sides are completely blank- mine have spots, and their spots are showing up more as they settle in.
And holy cow, these guys SUCK at eating. Mine are all about the size of an actual silver dollar, and since I got them yesterday, I just fed them for the first time today- bloodworms. They had trouble eating the bloodworms. Granted, the bloodworms are fat and curled into circles, but my glowlights tackle them with no real problems.
Yes, I know silver dollars need plenty of veggies. Bloodworms are my default food for new fish, as the scent often coaxes them into eating, and these guys definitely liked the scent.

I personally dont care for them. Cool looking fish but man they eat like lawn mowers. I had a group of metynnis fasciatus. Rehomed them and couldnt be happier i hated having to over feed

What are some recommended veggies to give to silver dollars? I have some nori somewhere, I think.

They'll eat any green leafy vegetable. As a matter of fact they eat just about anything and everything to the point it's almost impossible to get food to anything else in the tank.
