why does my tank do this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Doing a water change and cleaning your filter at the same time should not cause a problem at all. There is very few if any bacteria in the water itself the majority is in your filters. Now cleaning both filters at the same time I can see this causing a problem but not a water change and a filter at the same time. I think you need to do some digging because I think your problem lies else were.

thats what i ment. last year i made a mistake of cleaning both canisters and a wc so yea... tomorrow im going to check my tap water, and hopefully the tank will clear up by tomorrow. so i'll make an update post tomorrow when i get home from school ;)

THANKS everyone for the input.

I clean the mechanical filters in tap water every time I do a water change, most of the bacteria is in the biomedia. unless the canister is filled with only mechanical filters I would think you should be able clean them safely, with the water change.

Many members want to help, but the original thread provides very little information.

Perhaps, take time to let us know:

1) tank size.
2) fish tank stocks and sizes.
3) Spec and make of filters.
4) your detailed procedure for wc's and cleaning the canisters
5) mini cycle - you mean amonia spikes for 2 days, then down again? or is it nitrates? did you do water test?

It could be as simple as you need more volume of bio media.

More detail provided, betters answers ;)

You can clean canisters and the mech sponges out often, as long as you DONT clean the Biological media out with tapwater, then the BB is safe.

update... the tank is back to crystal clear again... wierd. but when i said cleaned the filters, i cleaned the bio media by accident...in tap water. but my filters are: two eheim proII 2028 and one ac110

i was having similar problem. my weekly wc i cleaned gravel as much as i could. my tank would be cloudy for few hours. i have taken all gravel out. now when do wc tank crystal clear before and after.

Yeah!! BB is really the way to go if you want your water pristine and clear. Best decision I made also to take out all my rocks and gravel and decor. Just left 1 large driftwood as token furniture for the gang.

Without gravel, the mechanical filtration is able to work to the best of its abilities.

If you are noticing this after simply doing a water change. I would start with testing your water for the presence of ammonia. Additional ammonia and low amount of bacteria could cause a mini cycle.
