i keep tanganyikans, very sensitive ones at that, so i rarely rinse the media in my 40 gallon that houses xenos and cyps and kilesa (all VERY sensitive cichlids). however, when i do a water change, its about 100 percent. I just make sure i take out about 25% each time (remove/replace) until the water is polished enough.
in my less sensitive tanganyikan tanks (all my tanks have coral substrate btw), i can be more agressive and do 100%+ water changes and clean media at the same time, and have NEVER had issues with my hardier tanks.
one thing i've learned the very hard way is to never change water after a heavy rain. i've read that ph can fluctuate when water treatment facilities are overrun after heavy rainfall.
