I disagree. It's not the worst smell ever. If you ever had missing dead fish hidden in the house that you couldn't find, man that sticks like hell.

When I had like 20 bichirs in a tank and a few of them would jump out and decompose behind the tank, and I would only notice the smell and thought I must have some dead rats in the house but couldn't find any rat.....
Try a bag of dead snails. That's a lot worse.

I think Prime is a great smell. It always reminds me of fish keeping.
I wouldn't call it a "great" smell, but I can never resist sniffing it whenever I do a water change.

I find the smell to be nasty, but it goes away fairly quickly, however there are worse smells, What about the smell of massivore, it made the whole house reek

I've just switched to "Seachem Prime" water conditioner because it removes CHLORINE, CHLORAMINE & traces of HEAVY METALS. Oh & of course the concetration factor. Now only one or two other water conditioners do all that :headbang2

I am not sure what smell are you alarmed about, but I'll have a sniff when I get home :screwy:
I use a dropper to measure Prime & dump it in the new water. Done in a couple of seconds.
Also, ********s smell as well & they are still being carried around, because they serve they purpose well :grinno:

The Kent dechlorinator is for fresh, too? I have always used Prime because it's the most cost effective. I'll have to compare prices with the Kent stuff and see who wins.

Crap, now I have to smell it when I get home. I've always just poured and dumped...I never took the time to sniff it :) lol

(Is it OK to quote myself? :headbang2)

I just "sampled" it. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but yeah, it's pretty nasty! My daughter just tried it too. She wrinkled up her nose and said "Dad, it smells like poop!" lol

The dechlorinating compound in Prime is Sodium Thiosulfate (also spelled "Thiosulphate") Key terms being the "sulphate/sulfate" part. This means it has sulfur in it, and as we all know, that's the "rotten egg smell." Farts, poop, rotten egg smell = Sulfur.

Actually Prime is made of hydrosulfite salts, not thiosulfate. Sodium thiosulfate has not odour (at neutral pH's).
Hydrosulfites will have the rotten egg odour.

Burt :)
