So, (that was just for you Oddball Re: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36596 )
I work in a general aquarium dealing with tropics mainly. But anyway, This person came in with their partner and were looking around they called for help and were asking 100000 questions, what fish can go with what, how big does this get (guppy) will this (kuhli loach) and this (spiny eel) breed quickly, to which I answered, no, it will be very slow, so slow in fact they won’t even bother with it. Do you have any of those “nemo” fish do you have any of those “nemo” fish friends, I act like I don’t know what a nemo is, while this Disney Pixar presentation is playing in the background of the shop. They just set up a tank about this (makes stupid hand sizes ranging from 1.5 – 4ft aquariums all of which includes 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 feet tanks) So he had no idea of the tank size, No filter, heaps of un-washed gravel and freshly filled water so it was a *tad* murky (LOL) I suggested to him many times thru the conversation, maybe you should just purchase the filter and the heater and buffers etc.. just for now, come back tomorrow and I’ll fix you up with your fish once everything settles. But no, they want it now..

I can totally appreciate that people have no freaking idea about fish, But if you see a Saratoga leichardti in a tank all by it’s self and it’s totally ramming at the silver dollars in the tank next door, it would be a safe assumption to say, that this little punk is not a friendly community fish. Anyway!

So they spent about 300 dollars on fish, bristle nose and guppies and other fancy little idiots, filter and heater etc..
Why don’t people listen these fish are just going to wind up dead the conditions aren’t right, the temp won’t be suitable and the filter, well it won’t be as clean as tomorrow or the next day, Oh!
And another thing, if you wife taps at the tanks in the shop ah la Antoine Laconte styles in Duece Bigalow *fishy fishy fishy* do you think they enjoy that?

Good luck strange man who wanted 40 fish in an unknown sized fish tank, you’re going to need it.

Yes, I suggested that he come back after everything is settles and waters are warm, Yes I suggested that he should start with only a few fish, yes I tried to help him understand that filtration is important. I feel like I’ve done more than enough to try to discourage him from purchasing fish, I’m not a selling machine, I would rather have happy customers and living fish than a bag full of crap and complaints from morons.
God Speed little fishies!

Poor fish, you can't help but laugh at morons like them :nilly: (i love that smiley lol)

More serious note, people are just ignorant, we would rather think we are right then listen to wisened people, that is one of the main problems with todays modern world.

Ya i ran into an awesome fellow today at the lfs.. The Staff was telling him why they don't carry Pacu.. And he stated they should because she was wrong and they really only get 5-7" .. Well i came in a little late to the conversation... :) I stated that there was infact a 6" pacu at the lfs up the street.. This is how i found out he was looking for the walmart special Pacu and just didn't trust the water at wally world or Petco LOL.. He said when they get around 6-7 inches they die real fast.. I of course said well what size of tank are you using (thinking he was going to say at least 200) As he seemd a little learned LOL Hell no he was keeping 4-8 PACUs IN A FREAKIN 30 Gallon tank
:eek3:  :eek3:

The conversation ended shortly after and I left him wondering where he was going to find his baby Pacu LOL I didn't shoot him down .. I just politely hhmm thats weird i'm turning soft :( Anyway politely told him why his fish died, and made a few suggestions and left him to his own devices..

if i had a fish shop i would of refused to sell him any fish untill he got his tank set up right (and if u lost his custom who cares cause if he whent and gone to another fish shop and buy all the fish and then deid then maybe he'll learn that u cannot buy all ya fish at once and may consider that u are actualy doing a good job) cause he may come back and say y did u tell about this and that

I praise you man. I have worked in a few shops in Hobart, The same thing has happened to me SOOOOOO many times its not funny.. PEOPLE READ A BOOK OR 10 before you buy or consider buy any fish or tanks. RESEARCH!!!
Anyway, congrats on staying calm.. What shop do you work in?
I know of a couple in Sydney.
Oh yea.. I like that smiley as well.. LOL :nilly: :nilly: :nilly:

The problem is that many novice fishkeepers think they are experts, and don't need to do research. I can't tell you how many redtailed cats go through the door at 3"...They end up being put in various community tanks, only to be returned after they grow and eat everything in the tank with them, haha. My buddy who owns a LFS ends up warning them that these grow quite large and rather quickly, but the "experts" usually don't listen.

I meet 4 of those kind of people minimum everyday.

I have to explain basic fish keeping a minimum of 5 times daily.
of course some people just don't care, and they explain to me that
their bowl has been working for 2 days now and they don't see a problem.

and i tell them why in a few days everything will die, but w/e

I feel that as long as I give them all the info, wether they use it or not is up to them :)

It's human nature..

Think about it. KIDS think they know everything & its not till we mature that we realize how stupid we are.

It's a similar cycle with novice wannabee fish keepers.

I know this gigas will be fine in my vase fish bowl, my beta was in there 6 months before it died.

Then all of the sudden it hits you, You have multiple tanks & fish older than you can remember & BAM, you sit back & say "Dang I have been so lucky, I messed up everything on my way here. I better do some more research before I kill all these fish."

The sooner these folks realize how stupid they are, the smarter they can become.
