If it makes people feel better, not all newbie fish owners are idiots. I have an empty 125g in my house right now and I have never owned fish before. I havent bought fish yet because I have still been researching what to get and how to take care of it.

Simple. Tell em we refuse to sell you the fish on the condition that you are unable to provide good living and healthy conditions for the animal.

When u get a dog from the pet store MAN how much do they make u get b4 they let u have the dam dog. Should be the same for fish. Its aniamal cruelty to give $300 of fish to a person who rekons a filter ISNT important.

Its funny, I can already tell this is going to be a huge hobby for me, my 125 isnt even filled up yet and Im already starting to think about my next tank.....I think Im going to build it

a bunch of my friends, moderate fw experience, have been hit by nanoreef fever lol. they're getting some expensive lessons these days.

i've been reading for a couple years now waiting to convert a 55 someday.

Think about it. KIDS think they know everything & its not till we mature that we realize how stupid we are.

It's a similar cycle with novice wannabee fish keepers.

I know this gigas will be fine in my vase fish bowl, my beta was in there 6 months before it died.

Then all of the sudden it hits you, You have multiple tanks & fish older than you can remember & BAM, you sit back & say "Dang I have been so lucky, I messed up everything on my way here. I better do some more research before I kill all these fish."

The sooner these folks realize how stupid they are, the smarter they can become.

I praise you man. I have worked in a few shops in Hobart, The same thing has happened to me SOOOOOO many times its not funny.. PEOPLE READ A BOOK OR 10 before you buy or consider buy any fish or tanks. RESEARCH!!!
Anyway, congrats on staying calm.. What shop do you work in?
I know of a couple in Sydney.

Well 40 fishes it just toooooooooooooooo carzy! it is possible only if you like cleaning out the tank and fliter out every 2-3days. the most i had in my 10gallon was about 28 fishes the lived because they were small baby fishes and had a 50gallon water filter, until my freshwater 5' prawn and my 5' salvini chiclid, they ate them down to 23 fishes(sucks if i know a salvini chiclid eat other fish-which they do have teeth; i would never bought it.)

for the freshwater prawn the sale lady who said to own 5 fish tanks and a 255gallon saltwater tank. said it be ok and won't eat my fishes(note to self; never go agaisnt will or instinct . Because i knew crawdads eat fishes/meat -prawn is no different.) so i went and go ahead and bought the Prawn thought it might be magical looking, in my heavy planted tank.
I had tetras, convicts, fire mouth, clown laoches, alge eaters, synotis catfishes, irridesents, red tail sharks, silver pidolmilious(not sure how to spell it...) their are more on the list.(can't rember them all because the predators eat themm; -Nuts!)

well most of them are still alive. (-thankyou fish God!)

I just dont like the fact that the fish are not coverd under the curelty to animals. I think if people were forced to do the research they wouldnt go in so haphazardly into the keeping of fish. But what happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors... the spending so much on fish before buying would be a good thing. I think also they should have fish consultants, where you start by going into an office and ask questions about what type of fish you are looking for then they take a walk around with suggestions, then they go back and get at the very minimum the basic proper size for what they want. heck even pay for fish before they have the tank up and running but don't give them till they have it running and only a few at a time. sigh we can only dream.
