Why don't people listen?

I know how you all feel. I just quit my job of a year and a bit in the pet industry because we get treated like garbage, paid nothing and are expected to deal with ignorance every day with a smile on our faces. It breaks my heart every day to see people treat fish the way they do. I have too many tanks, and too much passion for the hobby to have some newbie knowitall tell me that he can keep his pacu in a ten gallon tank with his discus. Or to have someone ask if their fish are dead because there is no water in the tank.

The industry is brutal in my area.

Whenever I come across a customer who want to put an oscar in 10g, or wants to use the cheapest filter for his goldfish tank, I tell them this:

"Imagine being locked inside your house...no air is coming in or out, and the garbage is never taken out...oh yeah, and there's no plumbing. Imagine what life will be like after a week in that house. Then imagine sharing that same house with several other people. Things are going to get pretty nasty pretty quickly..."

I explain to the customer that filtration is the aquarium equivalent to indoor plumbing, and then ask what quality septic tank they have. Soon I probably ask them that if they were a fish living in their aquarium, would they prefer the cheapest filter or the best one.

Water changes I often liken to regular household chores, like taking out garbage, sweeping, mopping, dusting, doing dishes, etc. Could we live in such an environment for a month or so? Sure, but it would get icky fast.

I've been using this analogy for a couple weeks now, and for the most part, my customers seem to be making better choices for their pets...not to mention, they're buying more stuff; too bad I don't get commission). For those of you who work in petstores, perhaps giving this perspective to customers might come in handy, and you might feel a little happy when you clock out, too.

This is quite an interesting thread and a nice view of the other side of the coin when you consider most forums take the line that LFS information cannot be trusted, and that all they want to do is make money from you. Maybe these ignorant people have been given bad advice previously in other stores and can't understand the contradiction

How about this one:
I want my money back these two pretty fishies are killin eachother (duuuuh two male bettas dumbass) any UKrs able to guess what type of person that was and what she looked like, you can tell by the retardedness of what she said.

I think that is the saddest thing that I've heard. Funny that a person could be that stupid, but very sad for the fish.
