Has any one ever seen any rays from Argentina, Paraguay, and or Uraguay for sell? I havnet so I wonder why...? Ive seen some pictured of beautiful rays from these countries but never for sell.

I would imagine it has to do with wholesaler interest and minimum orders..

Those interested exclusively in Stingrays, may have a hard time fulfilling the minimum order, as these countries don't offer the wide variety of oddities that Peru and other countries do.. (ie: add a few Juruense, and Tigrinus and you have a full order)

While those who do order from these countries on a regular basis are seeking smaller aquarium fish like tetras.. only the largest wholesalers tend to order from these countries on a regular basis, and if that wholesaler is not interested in expensive rays, than no one imports them at all really..

Only large distributorships that have great interest in rays are the ones who bring them in.. like Oliver at BelowWater..

I have also seen a few Paraguay and Uraguay type ray species being exported out of Peru, so perhaps if they are collected along or near a border, that is the most economical and realistic country to export from? I know that if the cost difference from Argentina and Colombia vary much at all, importers will choose Colombia any day to shorten flight time, reduce costs, and maximize profits..

These other countries also might have issues with collection zones (warfare, govt, etc) and have other issues with their fish and wildlife department.. collectively making it a bad experience and a less profitable venture to import from those countries..

I know of ALOT of cool species of fish from Peru, that I had the chance to import.. but after sitting down and looking at shipping figures and profit margin, these fish are simply a waste of time for anyone trying to stay in business. Do you know how many COOL tetras come out of Peru, but you never see any? The reason is because they would cost $14-15ea by the time they were sold to the public, while the cheapie tetras like skirts and bleeding hearts are a dime-a-dozen, cheap to ship in high numbers, and are more profitable.. Maybe the same reason we don't see those cool Tetra, is the same reason we don't see those Rays?

Sorry JD7.62 not trying to reply to all your threads but you keep makin em and I'm awake! :D

It does make sense that we dont see many simply because of cost. There arent many fish collected in these regions in the first place and lets face the demand and profit margin for any ray is actually really low compared to your bread and butter type fish.

It is odd that you have seen Southern SA out of Peru as those countries are a LONG LONG way from each other. The govts of the three countries I listed are pretty stable so that shouldnt be a problem.

I guess it just boils down to logistics and profit margins. Youd think that an exporter from southern Brazil ( I know there are one or two down there) could easily pull fish from Paraguay and Uraguay at least.

BTW does any one know exactly how far south rays exist?

Countries like Paraguay and Argentina have rather cold climates in some parts of their country. I know that in Paraguay during the winter there are die offs of piranha if the temp gets too cold.

I have seen exporters from Lima and Iquitos have fish that are suppose to come from Ecuador, Colombia, Paraguy and Bolivia? Dunno..

Even saw my exporter in Lima get offered a Green Phantom Pleco, which is suppose to come from Brazil..

I also wonder what the furthest 'Southern' ray is..Falkneri..Castexi..Motoro? Oliver might know.

I did read that they are mysteriously absent from the northeastern rivers however..

Pic examples?

Gr8 topic guys!

Heres an example of a fish you don't see often.. The two in the middle, Don't recall eithers name. I believe they are Tetra, they wer in a SA display. (note they had gibbiceps, rotkeils, and breeding bolivians rams in this habitat.).. Anyways, a very similar tetra is offered out of Peru at Juvenile sizes, at about $4/ea.. comparison to bleeding hearts at $0.25/ea. They come in boxes of 40, so that is a $160 box of Tetra.. that don't ship well, die easy, and you would have to charge $8/ea at wholesale. That means a LFS would have to charge $16+/ea for them, making them completely unaffordable by any hobbyist.

Basically, making it so no one wants to deal with them..

I would imagine additional shipping charges and box time, along with cost and rarity value of Argentina rays (brachyura) make it very unattractive for anyone to do this unless they were a ray specialist ~ such as Mike or Brad.. WINK WINK Venezuala, Yepezi.. :naughty::naughty::popcorn:

PS~ I kept rays in the pix woot

That "black barred" tetra looks so cool...thanks for sharing!

Wow that silver one is built just like an ATF!

I talked to my bro-inlaw and he is from Paraguay. He remembers as a kid there was a lake that they would go to where there were huge stingrays everywhere. Now he was about 10 at the time so the words "huge" and "everywhere" can have variable meanings!

It would be interesting to see how cold hardy the most southern species of rays are.
