  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
very nice ray..... and a amazing pearl in your avatar....

Interesting.. I bet Oliver Lucanus would know more on this subject.

So much confusion from the true P. Hystrix, but if it was described in that region I bet that was the ray !!

very intersting ray..... are you planning on breeding these??? would be nice to have another smaller ray for the home aquarium.....

Described in 1834, a mottled stingray, from Argentina.. strange?

Miles - what were the two tetras listed as? I've been seeing a lot more of the 'unusual' and more expensive tetras at a couple of the LFS here lately.

They were on display at Vancouver BC public aquarium. I had posted the pix before and they were ID'ed, but I don't know what happened to that thread..

unfortunatly I only got this male!
It was sent with a lot of Gymnogeophagus from Argentina an was sold as a Pot. Argentina Marbled. I do not know where it was caught exactly and the importer did also not know:(
I did not want to cross him with my scobinas or any of my other rays and failed in getting a suitable female.......so I gave him away again after about half a year, because of a lack of tank space and because all my other female rays seemed to look much too attractive to him, even the much bigger Leopoldis :D

I want to concentrate on brasilian rays only, or almost only.....

Regards
Stefan

Heres an example of a fish you don't see often.. The two in the middle, Don't recall eithers name. I believe they are Tetra, they wer in a SA display. (note they had gibbiceps, rotkeils, and breeding bolivians rams in this habitat.).. Anyways, a very similar tetra is offered out of Peru at Juvenile sizes, at about $4/ea.. comparison to bleeding hearts at $0.25/ea. They come in boxes of 40, so that is a $160 box of Tetra.. that don't ship well, die easy, and you would have to charge $8/ea at wholesale. That means a LFS would have to charge $16+/ea for them, making them completely unaffordable by any hobbyist.

Basically, making it so no one wants to deal with them..

I would imagine additional shipping charges and box time, along with cost and rarity value of Argentina rays (brachyura) make it very unattractive for anyone to do this unless they were a ray specialist ~ such as Mike or Brad.. WINK WINK Venezuala, Yepezi.. :naughty::naughty::popcorn:

PS~ I kept rays in the pix woot

is that an african on the lower right corner?

It is for sure some sort of cichlid (notice straight dorsal) but given the amazon bio-tope and rams in the background I assume it is a South American cichlid.

StefanW, shame you had to let it go. That is such a unique ray!
