awwww :) its a baby dat!

im with joelR though, deffo needs some stuff in there though... but im biased, i like natural looking tanks

if i ever would of put my puffer in an empty tank, it would of killed me when i slept...

and i spend money everyday too... its becoming a joke. its been said by numerous people on MFK before but... HELP IM FISH POOR!!!

lol,, you all be happy to know that todays trip (like i go every day) to the lfs has seen me come home with 25kg's of black sand , its washed and in , and it really brings out the colors of the fish , gives a nice dark ocean look also , so i think i need to look at the lighting system and what would suit my needs best ,, i dont think i will need to cater for plants ,, sugestions welcome ,

oh and i will see if i can get a pic of the black sand in a while when the slight cloud has gone ,,

black brings out the colours of your fish. i had a black background on my brackish tanks for this reason, as i had white playsand in my tanks. if i had a light background, and white sand, my fish would of bleached out. i also had tannins in my water from my wood.

the only thing with black substrates in my opinion is that they suck light in. my GF had black gravel (2mm) in her 10gal and we changed it for playsand like my tank. the amount of extra light reflected from the substrate was astounding.

if you want to do your lighting, ive told other people to run what i run. i run 50w of T8 in total. thats light enough for me to grow coral on my 15" deep tank. its 25w marine white, and 25w actinic. the white illuminates the tank, and the actinic brings out the colours of the fish. it may not work on your tank, but for mine its a nice colour. none of that 'pink' light that normally comes with tanks, it looks awful to me...

i wouldnt really worry about lighting for your fish, i think they will prefer subdued lighting (the dats anyway). they are predators after all, and predators are most active at dawn and dusk. get some rocks and big pieces of wood in there. give them somewhere to ambush from and to think out more and more ingenious ways to take out their prey... when you have the money of course. like i said, fish poor:)

yeah , i have put a big boulder in there that has some knock outs etc , quite decorative , the dats have already taken to using it as ambush and retreat point , i am going to look at some large bits of bog wood tomorrow , so i should come home withtsome more furniture for them tomorrow eve ,

i will prob keep the lighting low like you say , but would be good to have some extra for picture taking every now and then , we will see what happens ,

cheers for all the input ,

nice! cant wait for these pics:popcorn:

and it doesnt matter how much light you have. if like me, your fish wont sit still for 2 seconds, every pic comes out blurry anyway. :)

you have one hell of a stunning tank. the bogwood is a really nice piece.

but c'mon brackish dude. pics go in the thread, not in your signature. thats where the 'witty facts' (cough), and random quotes live:)
