Why haven't Coldwater species have been popularized yet?

Interesting thread that I've somehow missed until now.I'm just chiming in here and did not read from the beginning but did anyone bring up the various laws in the different states regarding the collection of these fish?...They could also be a reason for native fish not being as popular as they could be in hobby.

Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread

Timetraveler, I already knew what they looks like in their wild form. My point is that the regulations existed to prevent spreading non native fishes, both bait and aquarium. You could be surprised what I found while doing field work out in lakes and rivers. Bait dumps and aquarium releases are common unfortunately which that's why the regulations existed.

The native fish everyone forgets.... Rio Grande Cichlid. native to texas

Also saltwater fish from Hawaii and Florida count as natives

I'm not arguing natives are more colorful than tropicals. That a battle natives can't win. It just pains me when someone says native fish are not colorful. Many people keep very drab looking tropicals. Why not native/coolwater fish. There are many not so colorful ,interesting natives such as madtoms, pickerel, gar, eels, blackbanded sunfish, fliers, hogchokers, pupfish, killies, warmouth, sticklebacks and many more that I just can't think of at the moment.

And the introduction of fish into non native-water ways is a big concern and one reason some states ban the transport and keeping of them. Just look at Florida, it is overrun with non-native fish species.

Let me help you "native fans" out. Here's what I'm gunning for this year.

Im looking to go truly monster when I buy a house next year. Natives appeal to me because the tank will be very inexpensive to run without heaters in the mix.

I think it boils down to regulations, plus people want exotic stuff

its shameful that brook trout are intolerant of warm temperatures.
If I get any of these guys, they'll be going into a tank in my unfinished basement where summer time temp will only reach about 70 on hot days.
