Why hybrids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To be honest, there are plenty hybrids in trade. Platies, guppies, mollies and swordtails are actually hybrids. I don't mind the hybrids in our hobby as long as they are correctly labelled as hybrids instead of sell them as pure stock. Midevils (midas x red devil) are pretty common.

angels and discus too.

i never really cared either way, i see fish and fish and just buy what i like. it could be some messed up oddball but if i thought it was cool and could house it, i'd buy it

before, I thought hybrid fish wasn't something I'm going to get into either, but then, on a whim as an experiment, picked up some jellybean parrots, and just fell in love with them.

Highly active, social, and totally a breeze to take care of.

sometimes, just got to try it first before one make a cold judgement call.

they're not hybrids, just short-bodied convict cichlids.

i read somewhere that they were 3/4 convict and 1/4 severum because they came from a blood parrot breeding with a convict. sorry, but i forget where i read it:wall:

Nice to see a range of explanations on the subject, I know it an be a bit on the sensitve side for some people, but I appreciate peoples reasoning on this. I do find some hybrids to be very attractive, some less so, but realise that what someone adores, another will dislike, it doesn't make either position incorrect.

it would be more like a human mating with a gorilla and getting freakish offspring. On that note, I like my humarilla, no matter how mentally challenged and funny looking it may be.

Nice! What about Manimal? He solved crime.

I have to agree with Oscarum's position that most fish keepers are just people that enjoy the hobby and its not really that deep...myself included.

Exactly! My FH and line-bred Africans are not part of a socio-political statement; I just think they look cool.

Off topic but, man you really brought back some memories when you mentioned Manimal! I loved that show, more than most hybrids! I also liked the show Werewolf too. Ok nostalgia is over, back to hybrids.

with the logic that they are blood parrot (a hybrid of 2 other fish, probably severum x red devil) x convict that would mean that you need a total of "3" different fish, because blood parrots don't have convict in them.

3/4 con + 1/4 severum is only 2 fish, you need to squeeze a 3rd fish in there somewhere. so wherever you read this, it's wrong.

i don't want to hijack, so i'm not going to go into any detail here, just search them again, there's a bunch of threads about them here on mfk.
