i had the tank empty for a week but ive added Stress Zyme to add extra beneficial bacteria into the tank as i new that if it was empty it would soon all die off and would have needed to start a new cycleMorledzep;1885349; said:have you had the water you're doing your water changes with tested for chemicals?
you said you had other fish in the tank before you put the baby cichla in it.. how long was the tank empty in between? IF the other fish were out of the tank for more than 24 hours the beneficial bacteria started to die off, which would in turn poison the fish.. it may not have been bad enough to kill all the fish, so only the weaker ones didn't survive?
i keep the PH in all my tanks at 7.6 or higher for the africans. other than that i do water changes when the TDS meter gets over 400 ppm and/or the nitrates get high. with most of my tanks that's about once a month.
I also keep all the tanks with cichla in them at 86 degrees or higher.. anytime they drop below 82 degrees the tems get ich. a touch of salt.. about half of what it says to treat ich, and i run foam filters with air in addition to the main filtration in the tanks.
i have lost cichla, but the only ones i lost as tiny babies were to crayfish that my former hubby tried to tell me wouldn't eat my babies.. i've considered buying some more from NE, but i just don't have a place to put them right now..
when i bring new cichla home i plan in advance.. i get a tank started and cycled with cheap fish from the LFS (and none of these has ever died except as they've become cichla chow). with the 45 gal tank i kept guppies and mollies in it before. And then when the new cichla came from N-E i put them in that tank..
i've also done a quick cycle with clean water, used foam filter from one of the other tanks and a tube of bio-spira with only good results.
