WHY IS CROSS-BREEDING BAD?

You're going to get plenty of opposing views on this topic. I personally have no problem with hybrids just as long as they are handled and dispersed responsibly. The problems occur when people sell hybrids as pure bred species. For those that are seeking specific fish, it can be very annoying to pay for a certain fish just to find out that it is not the fish that you paid for. Then when keepers have a certain species that they are breeding, hybrids in the hobby can ruin the bloodlines of their stock. All that being said, I have seen some beautiful hybrids in this hobby. There are some that I wouldn't mind having. As long as they are properly represented as hybrids and given or sold to other responsible keepers, I think that there is a valid place for them. No one can dictate what goes with another person's stock anyway. Even if it is a pain to witness, people will do what they want in the confines of their home. Hybrids can be accidental or planned, but in the end it all boils down to the level of responsibilty of the keeper.

You make some good points. It boils down to buyer beware. Know what you are buying and who you are buying it from.

PetSmart/Petco/WalMart....roll the dice if you chose. LFS and individual breeders.....a little due diligence and it will become clear which ones are shifty and which ones are legit. Avoid impulse buys....research!

There are people that are going to keep 4 Oscars and 3 Pacus in a 55. Its going to happen.....nothing you can do about it.

I am anti-hybrid, mostly due to the fact that very low quality hybrids are passed around indiscriminately, especially to beginners who buy fish from the "assorted african cichlid" tank.

People, keep records and regulate your own hobby. If someone is not upholding the same ethic or seems unable to provide accurate information, move on and don't fraternize. Don't be a bone head intending to breed a true and legitimate species with fish that you can't verify. You can't control which fish spawns with which, or who they spawn for:naughty:, but you can promote your hobby with integrity by recognising those who share your views and practices, while respecting those who don't.
As said before, there's a place for everyone in th_is hobby.
