.... may I see some wife/gf pics first? We share a comon bond of topless appreciation, lets help each other out.

No we don't share a common topless appreciation bond on this forum. This is a forum for fish keepers. There are forums for sexual discussions where your comments would be suitable.

This forum is one of the more successful fish forums because there are a large percentage of forum members willing to help others by freely sharing information.

Ask how much you'd have to pay me to keep a blood parrot in one of my tanks. :D

That's exactly how I felt about BPs until I saw the one at WW Aquarium in Roxborough. The BP is now my center piece fish in my one community tank.

That's a good way to look at it. Providing the price to others on this forum gives them a baseline for their purchase. We have a common passion for fish keeping and we should be looking out for one another.

:iagree:

mostly the reason that i would ask someone what the paid. i am new to the hobby and it helps to keep me from getting ripped off. or to even know if i can afford a cool fish i see. also i like to know what the going rate for some fish are in other places so i can see if maybe the store i shop at is just way over priced and need to find a new one.(witch has happed)

but what if you're volunteering information that nobody asked you about? if i ask someone how much they paid for a fish i'm really sweet on, i don't really care what someone paid for the same specie but lower quality if i didn't ask them? IE, what just happened, the dude didn't even posts pics, his blood parrot could be a gremlin

There are a multitude of ways to conduct market research without asking inappropriate and unwanted personal questions of other hobbyists. Ive never asked them, yet I can easily find out the value of a fish by other means.

I agree but then its not a forum for financial discussion either. Remember, we are talking about people asking others how much they have spent on their purchases. I can post links to many threads that are ruined by people asking over and over what someopne has paid instead of discussing the subject of the thread. Look at the 50,000 gallon tank thread or any other thread about a major project - people dont like being asked such questions especially when it comes to expensive projects.

I have seen this phenomenon in other hobbies as well, no one likes the "Hey how much you paid for that?" guy.

You must be thinking of another forum. People on this forum are always offering the price they paid for filters, tanks, etc. Sure we have a number of members who come here just to brag or show off what they made without offering anyone help.

Look if you don't want to help others on this forum; that's your decision.

To me it all depends on who is asking. For various reasons, some already posted, I may either answer the question on an open forum or drop a pm. If a person doesn't want to say how much they spent on a fish or item, I don't care. I respect their wishes. Honestly, I wouldn't even ask anyone unless we have that kind of friendship and then it would most likely be a private conversation. I'm a private person and I generally don't like people too involved with my business, hobby wise or other. Sometimes people ask because they are trying to get the same thing at the best price available. If they trust you and your judgment, knowing how much you paid can be a real asset to them.

So, if I dont offer up what I paid for my fish, that equates into not wanting to help others? Thats just a weird thing to say.
