I did a test with some test stuff lying around and I got that my ammonias were like 3 instead of 8 and my nitrates were less then 5. I'm gonna get that API test kit but I really do think that guy at pet land was wrong.

or maybee I just want him to be wrong? thats possible I suppose
What brand is this test kit?
Did you check the expiration date?
Why is your ammonia that ridiculously high? This seems grossly inaccurate to me.

the test kits really old I dont think its right. if not that water how do I get water ready that they can live in.

I dont understand If its ammonia poisoning that why its only some of the fish. the green terrors seem fine. the one african is breathing heavily with its mouth wide open.

The symptoms of Malawi Bloat are very similar to those of Dropsy. Firstly a fish will entirely lose it's appetite. Then it will begin to develop the characteristic bloating and pineconing of scales. It's breathing rate will rapidly increase and will become somewhat lethargic, either hiding away or hovering at the surface. It will have white stringy faeces and red marks may appear around the fish's anus. Skin ulcerations might also be apparent. These dramatic symptoms only appear quite late on in the problem, and will be quite difficult to reverse which is why early treatment for this problem is vital.

there might be a deases as well I dont know. But I do know that I bought a API master test kit nitrates and nitrites were like zero. MY AMMONIA WAS 8.0. I am going to go do a huge water change right now. my dad made a comment to me that mabyee my wood was roting so I'm going to set it in some water and test that wasrer after a few days. I'll be back. thanks for all teh help guys I'll let you know how it turns out.

My educated guess is that something killed your bacteria off. Unless you figure out what it was, it could happen again later and undo all your current work to reverse the situation. Do you have kids? A careless wife? Did somebody CLEAN the tank?

My water change is done guys. I always get scared when I do a water change that everything is going to die. and this was a really big one. I made sure to add lots of cycle.

my tank is in a school I am the only one who does anything to it. ok now how do I make sure the water does not spike again? I did a huge water change.
