Great... I raised this guy for 7 months and he's deformed.

I don't need that man. I'm trying to grow a world class Convict.

Dropping this guy off at the LFS tomorrow.

Yeah, that tail has poor shape. To get your hands on a truly WORLD CLASS convict, you're gonna have to spend at least $3.99

That was a little harsh, Just try beef him up (he look thin) and treat him for internal parasites. I dont know what a world class convict looks like but their are so common and very cheaper. Just keep him and see how he turns after some treatments and feeding.

At the ACA 2009 annual convention in Cinci, a female convict won 1st place against about 20 other Central American fish. My F1 "Rio Choluteca" convict took 2nd place at this year's Aquafest here in Maryland...against like 20 other fish (my myrnae beat him).

Rarity has nothing to do with it.

It appears that the fish in question got his tail chewed off and re-grew it kind of funky. I'd suggest starting with a group of young fish (3/4" or so) and growing them out under ideal conditions - lots of water changes, good food, etc.

I keep and breed lots of different kinds of "convicts" (actually 4 species now + some underscribed ones) with provenance to the wild. Far more interesting to me than LFS ones that are likely hybrids.

I dont mean to have a dig... but why?

Convicts - common as muck, your not exactly going to be winning shows with em.

But, either way - to me, theres something wrong with the fish. Looks unhappy, and honestly, quite underfed.

Heres a healthy convict for comparison.

dude that is harsh, would you like it if some fish brought you home just to find out you are deformed and then gunna take you back cause they wanted a showcase bulldog93?? i didnt think so, so raise him up and you never now he may become a showcase con. right now hes just begging for help!!

Wait how is it better to "under feed"???? wouldn't it be best to feed him just enough?? lol... under feeding would decrease the growth rate wouldn't it and also he wouldn't be as bulky?

convicts are whores of the fish world. If your's could get big enough it would probably rape you for thinking about returning him. lol BEST IN SHOW = CONVICT = lame competition

Ryansmith83 I believe you are right. Also look at the clear white poo that the fish is releasing. Also a sign of an internal parasite. Bulldog you may want to watch that and your other fish. Has he stopped eating? I had a convict do this before with the clear stringy poo and I used Jungles antiparicite tabs and raises the tank temp with daily h2o changes and the fish was fine in a week... You probably shouldn't drop off a sick fish to a fish store.

lmao, that's not an eternal parasite, that's a smear from the glass. I'd post the big, original photo but I'm too lazy.

His poo is red from the Hikari Cichlid Gold.

C'mon man, get with it.

A few people in this thread clearly don't know what showing fish is all about. It's not about what species it is at all. In the overall categories, a good quality, well prepared Convict has as much chance of winning as a Guppy, which has as much chance of winning as an exC. beani, which has as much chance of winning as a $1 Goldfish.

However, with that said:

If you can't pick a deformed caudal like that from purchase, you've got a long way to go before you'll be raising any class of fish. If it wasn't like that from purchase, you've got even further to go.

Deformed caudal fins like the ones pictured are very common.
