Why is my fish sensitive to the light?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the help I tested my water right when I noticed the behavior. Everything tested good so I turned off the light (heard it reduces stress) and he came right out acting pretty normal. But he has never been so sensitive before. duanes duanes , I have read a previous thread where you stated doing that with lighting and took that advice months ago ;) I have my timer set to turn lights on at 10:30am after the sun has been out for a while so it wouldnt be as intense, and he never seemed to be bothered by light before. Heres a video of this behavior.

EDIT: Today has been an overcast kind ofday so maybe the ambiant lighting was not much today and thus the led lights“seemed” more intense to him? Could this be a possibility? But after a while do they not get used to the light? Because seemed no matter how long the lights were on he stayed under his slate rock. I do think its like what duanes was saying about natural instinct. But never noticed before and when lights go off he comes rightout so idk weird..

Hello again this is just an update. Today I have noticed same behavior, however I left everything as usual didnt adjust lights and sure enough after sitting in there with him for a few minutes, he came right out and is acting “normal” if not better than ever lol. Seems like he just likes hanging out under there and the lights must get to him at times but for the most part he doesnt seem bothered by it like he was yesterday. Maybe just instincts kicking in at times like duanes said. Thank you guys for the help with understanding this. I will post more if needed, here is a new video of how he is acting. Seems great to me!

I found with my jack Dempsey the older he got the less active he became. When he was younger he would use all areas of the tank top, bottom, middle, left and right. Nowadays he’s always on the bottom right side of the tank...only domes out to eat and night time.

your doing fine and I do t tho k there’s anything for you to worry about! Their behaviours change as they mature.
When do you plan to move him to the 75g tank?

Ahh interesting, thanks for sharing that. I am going to add him to the 75 gallon very soon, I just added a couple pieces of chala wood and spiderwood so I have been waiting for them to get “sunk” and then I will be officially ready to add him to the 75 gallon. ( just want to make sure all water parameters are stable AFTER everything has been in the tank a while. Just to be sure nothing I added will cause any ammonia .This is my first fish so I am still learning about whats normal and whats not. So thankful to this site and all the people here who have been helping me learn!
