Why is my Tiger Shovelnose Growing so slow

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
jason is right.. bigger tank and relax about how much he eats.. my TSN is 19" long. i feed the fish twice a week. when i feed the catfish tank he eats one.. sometimes 2 pieces of fish or 2 - 3 shrimp and even if i wanted to i could not make him eat more. He eats what he needs to eat, and then he doesn't eat anymore. And he is healthy and happy and still growing. (and he's about to move to bigger diggs.. )

good deal thanks man

Your lucky he is eating such a variety our TSN will only eat live minnows or pieces of fish he wont eat any pellets. I dont think you need the brine shrimp I would switch to peices of cooked cocktail shrimp you can buy it frozen and it is cheap and lasts a while. Also he will grow much faster than what hes eating now believe it or not feeder guppies as a staple aren't very substantial. Once yours gets to about 6 in he will start growing at a faster rate! You are at the slow stage right now... Keep the water very clean and get him eating pieces of shrimp, smelt, and even tilapia and he will be a happy guy! GL!! you got any pics?

thanks guys, i really appreciate all the help

that's the issue i've been wondering about. this guy was supposed to be a growout for my cousins indoor pond, well the fish has decided it doesn't want to grow nearly at all, i think it's added maybe an inch if that in length since that thread. and it eats frickn everything as mentioned on that schedule, in a 220gallon tank with weekly 40-50% water changes. i swear it is the slowest growing tsn in catfish history, or it just isn't going to grow.

perhaps it has already been stunted due to the long period of time in that small tank! once they miss that growth spurt they will tend to grow extremely slowly no matter wat they eat. in addition they lose out on their potential max size!

is this directed at me??? if so
possibly, although my 220 is much larger than a lot of ppl's growouts so??? i don't understand how that'd be the case.(and yes i understand a 220 is not the be all end all for this fish, but it's like 10" still not 20")
